Shot down during a bombing raid on Germany, Flying Officer Robbie Ticknall soon finds himself an unwilling guest of the Third Reich. He comes face to face with victims of the attack and begins to question the morality of his actions. He finds himself seemingly haunted by the apparitions of two children. Has he killed them? And if so, do they want revenge? If not, why are they appearing to him? The apparitions follow him into captivity, a constant reminder of the consequences of carrying out his duty. War Crime deals with the personal moral dilemma faced by many bomber aircrew. The killing of civilians during bombing raids was thrown back at Bomber Command veterans by critics when the war was over and the Nazis had been defeated. Bomber Command aircrew were not monsters; they were, for the most part, very young men doing an extremely hazardous job, and more than 55,000 lost their lives. They were often the victims of atrocities when bailing out of downed aircraft. Above all they were men with consciences. Simon Hepworth's short story (15,000 words) is the second in his series The Dark Part of the Sky, paranormal stories exploring the reality of taking part in bombing operations. Simon Hepworth is a Bomber Command researcher and author. He has written a series of histories of 514 Squadron RAF as well as Late Shift, a full-length paranormal crime comedy drama, a genre guaranteed to confuse librarians. All his books are available through Amazon in print and through Kindle. Late Shift is in production as an audiobook. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Simon Hepworth. Nia experienced déjà vu happening right before her eyes. Her gut begged her to run in the other direction, but the strong hold that love had on her kept her stuck in place. East had truly been heaven-sent, and after the time they spent together, and the memories they made, she couldn’t see life without him. Dealing with a man in the streets was more than what these young girls posted on Instagram...the late nights and early mornings, missed calls, and phone going straight to voicemail. It was more than watching him stow funds away in a board under the floor, and it was beyond bailing him out of jail due to a petty charge. She wasn’t just laying down beside a local dope boy at night. No, those days were behind East. Once he reached higher heights and joined the ranks of the Who’s Who in the streets, the ones closest to him true colors were exposed. Her grandmother used to tell her, before she passed, that new levels brought new devils, and this was back in the '80s when she would tell Nia to watch the ones closest to her. For that very reason, she never hung with many people. Nia kept a tight circle, and even the ones she considered “friends” didn’t know her every move. Nia believed in making moves in silence and allowing success to make the noise for her. She didn’t showboat, flex, boast, brag…none of that; it wasn’t in her to do so. Neither was it in East. He was the same way and of the exact same caliber. They were perfect together and still are, even though he’s fighting for his life...all because his “friend” couldn’t stomach to see him doing better than he.... In Love with a Brooklyn Thug 2 is the explosive sequel to Part I. ungekürzt. An adrenaline-fuelled exposé of life inside the tech bubble, Chaos Monkeys lays bare the secrets, power plays and lifestyle excesses of the visionaries, grunts, sociopaths, opportunists and money cowboys who are revolutionising our world. Written by startup CEO and industry provocateur Antonio García Martínez, this is Liar's Poker meets The Social Network. Computer engineers use 'chaos monkey' software to wreak havoc and test system robustness. Similarly, tech entrepreneurs like Antonio García Martínez are society's chaos monkeys - their innovations disrupt every aspect of our lives, from transportation (Uber) and holidays (Airbnb) to television (Netflix) and dating (Tinder) - all in search of the perfect business miracle. Describing himself as 'high strung, fast talking, and wired on a combination of caffeine, fear, and greed at all times', García Martínez left Wall Street to make his fortune in Silicon Valley, becoming CEO of his own start-up before bailing and being poached by Facebook's nascent advertising team. Here he turned users' data into profit for COO Sheryl Sandberg and chairman and CEO Mark 'Zuck' Zuckerberg. Forced out of Facebook in the wake of a bitter internal product war, García Martínez took his unique brand of entrepreneurial hyperactivity to rivals Twitter. Along the way he got into a lot of trouble with a lot of people, brewed illegal beer on the Facebook campus (accidentally flooding Zuckerberg's desk), lived on a yacht, raced sport cars on the highway, and enthusiastically pursued the lifestyle of an overpaid Silicon Valley mercenary. In Chaos Monkeys he tells you how - and how not - to make a fortune through start-ups and digital marketing. Highly entertaining and always offering genuine insight, García Martínez unravels the chaotic evolution of social media and online marketing. From start-ups and credit derivatives to Big Brother and data tracking, social media monetisation and ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan John Miller. On day nine of the Battle of the Bulge, flying his P-47 fighter plane, Second Lt. Donald N. Evans was shot down behind enemy lines and reported missing. After bailing out seconds before his plane crashed, Don limped and crawled through deep snow, trying to find a way back to the American front lines. Lost, cold, and hungry, he spent Christmas Eve huddled under a pine tree in the Ardennes Forest, wondering if he'd ever see his family again.Ahead of him lay capture by German SS Troops, a 200-mile forced march in frigid winter weather, near starvation, abuse by guards, and internment in a German POW camp. His will to overcome near insurmountable odds is inspiring. That he actually did so is a miracle. From dirt-poor, small-town roots, Don was the quintessential all-American boy, becoming student body president of his high school and earning all-state honors in football, basketball, and tennis. At age 18, he was attending college, had fallen in love, and appeared destined for a bright future. Then, fate stepped in. Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, and America entered World War II. Don joined 16 million other young Americans and entered the US military. Before shipping overseas, he married his high school sweetheart Laura Jeanne. On July 16, 1944, he boarded the Queen Elizabeth with 15,000 other soldiers, sailing past the Statue of Liberty and out to sea. Excerpts from Don and Laura Jeanne's deeply personal letters allow listeners to glimpse emotional events through the eyes of a young couple who lived through these remarkable times.Don and four other flyboys in the 368th Fighter Group of the Ninth Air Force became so close they called themselves "The Five". The author weaves their stories together from letters, journals, personal histories, mission reports, and interviews. This is an unforgettable story of love, friendship, courage, and survival, with the Great Depression and World War II as a backdrop. ungekürzt. Captain Herndon pointed to the thinning clouds and predicted that their breaking up portended an end to the storm. He spoke to the men at the pumps; he cheered the men in the bailing lines. He told them he thought the storm was abating, and that if they would just continue to bail until noon, the steamer might be saved.... Though the passengers received the captain's comments with great cheer, Herndon knew his hope was false. He knew the sea would rise again and the wind would blow with even greater fury. He knew that a ship floating 750 tons of iron with water filling her hold, and more water constantly rushing in, could remain afloat but a short while longer. - Gary Kinder, Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea: The History and Discovery of the World's Richest Shipwreck There have been countless numbers of shipwrecks over the course of history, but few have had as great an impact as the sinking of the SS Central America in a hurricane in September 1857. The California Gold Rush was in full swing, state of the art steamer ships were used to transport the discovered gold back east, and the Central America was one of them. On its fateful voyage, the ship was carrying nearly 600 passengers and a huge haul of up to 20 tons of gold worth an estimated $2 million at the time. On the way from Cuba to New York City, the Central America was caught in a Stage Two hurricane that it never had a chance of knowing about ahead of time. With winds over 100 miles per hour, the hurricane ripped its sails, and the ship started taking on water while struggling to keep its boiler going. These conditions all but doomed the ship. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dave Wright. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/032246/bk_acx0_032246_sample.mp3. Buckle your seat belts. New York Times best-selling author Janet Evanovich is moving into the fast lane with Metro Girl, a thrilling, high-octane misadventure with high stakes, hot nights, cold-blooded murder, sunken treasure, a woman with a chassis built for speed, and one very good, very sexy NASCAR driver who's along for the ride. "Wild" Bill Barnaby's dropped off the face of the earth and big sister Alex heads for Miami, Bill's last known sighting, on a harrowing hunt to save her brother...and maybe the world. Truth is, Alex has been bailing her brother out of trouble since they were kids. Not that Bill's a bad sort. More that he acts first and thinks later. Unfortunately, this time around, Wild Bill will be Dead Bill if Alex doesn't find him in time. Alex blasts through the bars of South Beach and points her search to Key West and Cuba, laying waste to Miami hit men, dodging Palmetto bugs big enough to eat her alive, and putting the pedal to the metal with NASCAR driver Sam Hooker. Engaged in a deadly race, Wild Bill has "borrowed" Hooker's sixty-five foot Hatteras and sailed off into the sunset...just when Hooker has plans for the boat. Hooker figures he'll attach himself to Alex and maybe run into Bill. Maybe Hooker can salvage what's left of his vacation. And maybe Hooker'll get lucky in love with Bill's sweetie-pie sister. After all, Hooker is NASCAR Guy. And NASCAR Guy is good at revving a woman's engine. The race to the finish is hot and hard, taking Alex and Hooker into international waters, exposing a plot to grab Cuban gold and a sinister relic of the Cuban missile crises. Creative cussing and sexual innuendo included. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: C.J. Critt. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/harp/000900/bk_harp_000900_sample.mp3. Murphy's Law tells us that if something can go wrong, it will. Nonsense! says Al Casey, who maintains: If things can go right, they should. But you've got to make them go right, he adds, by hard work, focusing on key problems, and believing in the people around you. One of the most successful - and original - American businessmen of our time, Al Casey is a no-nonsense turnaround specialist who loves nothing more than the big challenges, whether in the private or the public sector. As president of the Times Mirror Corporation, he was instrumental in taking that West Coast company, whose main "product" was the Los Angeles Times, and turning it into a multifaceted media giant, with interests in magazines, newspapers, book publishing, forest products, radio, and television. As chairman of American Airlines for 11 years, he took that ailing giant - heavily in debt and losing money when he became CEO early in 1974 - and made it into the highly profitable, preeminent company it still is today. As postmaster general he attacked the problems of the country's largest government agency - with almost a million employees - and left it leaner, more motivated, for the first time truly competitive, and - to the great surprise of Washington insiders - both efficient and profitable. When the savings and loan debacle unfolded in the late 1980s, with hundreds of thrifts having failed and hundreds more under siege, Al Casey was named chairman of the Resolution Trust Corporation, with the impossible job of bailing out a situation that was threatening the entire banking system of the United States. In this book Al Casey tells his fascinating latter-day Horatio Alger story, from boyhood days in Arlington, Massachusetts, where he grew up during the Great Depression, through his 50-year business career, to his current role as Distinguished Professor at SMU's Cox School of Business, where he is helping form a new generation of business leaders and managers. Governments today in both Europe and the United States have succeeded in casting government spending as reckless wastefulness that has made the economy worse. In contrast, they have advanced a policy of draconian budget cuts - austerity - to solve the financial crisis. We are told that we have all lived beyond our means and now need to tighten our belts. This view conveniently forgets where all that debt came from. Not from an orgy of government spending, but as the direct result of bailing out, recapitalizing, and adding liquidity to the broken banking system. Through these actions private debt was rechristened as government debt while those responsible for generating it walked away scot free, placing the blame on the state, and the burden on the taxpayer. That burden now takes the form of a global turn to austerity, the policy of reducing domestic wages and prices to restore competitiveness and balance the budget. The problem, according to political economist Mark Blyth, is that austerity is a very dangerous idea. First of all, it doesn't work. As the past four years and countless historical examples from the last 100 years show, while it makes sense for any one state to try and cut its way to growth, it simply cannot work when all states try it simultaneously: all we do is shrink the economy. In the worst case, austerity policies worsened the Great Depression and created the conditions for seizures of power by the forces responsible for the Second World War: the Nazis and the Japanese military establishment. As Blyth amply demonstrates, the arguments for austerity are tenuous and the evidence thin. Rather than expanding growth and opportunity, the repeated revival of this dead economic idea has almost always led to low growth along with increases in wealth and income inequality. Austerity demolishes the conventional wisdom, marshaling an army of facts to demand that we recognize austerity for what it is, and what it costs us. ungekürzt. Language: English.
