The Tunnels: The True Story of Tunnel 29 and the Daring Escapes Under the Berlin Wall , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 719min
In the summer of 1962, one year after the rise of the Berlin Wall, a group of daring young West Germans risked prison, Stasi torture and even death to liberate friends, lovers and strangers in East Berlin by digging tunnels under the wall. Then, as the world's press heard about the secret projects, two television networks raced to be the first to document them from the inside, funding two separate tunnels for exclusive rights to film the escapes. In response President John F. Kennedy and his administration, wary of anything that might raise tensions and force a military confrontation with the Soviets, maneuvered to quash both documentaries. As Greg Mitchell's riveting narrative unfolds, we meet extraordinary characters: the legendary cyclist who became East Berlin's most wanted man; the tunneller who had already served four years in the East German gulag; the Stasi informer who betrayed the 'CBS tunnel'; the young East Berliner who escaped with her baby, then married one of the tunnellers; and an engineer who would later help build the tunnel under the English Channel. Capturing the hopes and fears of everyday Berliners, the chilling reach of the Stasi secret police and the political tensions of the Cold War, The Tunnels is breaking history, a propulsive listen whose themes still reverberate today. ungekürzt. Berlin on the Brink: The Blockade, the Airlift, and the Early Cold War , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 887min
The Berlin blockade brought former allies to the brink of war. Britain, France, the United States and the Soviet Union defeated and began their occupation of Germany in 1945. Within a few years, the Soviets and their Western partners were jockeying for control of their former foe. Attempting to thwart the Allied powers' plans to create a unified West German government, the Soviets blocked rail and road access to the western sectors of Berlin in June 1948. With no other means of delivering food and supplies to the German people under their protection, the Allies organized the Berlin airlift. In Berlin on the Brink: The Blockade, the Airlift, and the Cold War, Daniel F. Harrington examines the "Berlin question" from its origin in wartime plans for the occupation of Germany through the Paris Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in 1949. Harrington draws on previously untapped archival sources to challenge standard accounts of the postwar division of Germany, the origins of the blockade, the original purpose of the airlift, and the leadership of President Harry S. Truman. While thoroughly examining four-power diplomacy, Harrington demonstrates how the ingenuity and hard work of the people at the bottom - pilots, mechanics, and Berliners - were more vital to the airlift's success than decisions from the top. Harrington also explores the effects of the crisis on the 1948 presidential election and on debates about the custody and use of atomic weapons. Berlin on the Brink is a fresh, comprehensive analysis that reshapes our understanding of a critical event of cold war history. The book is published by University Press of Kentucky. ungekürzt. Crossing the Wall: History , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 8min
Learn about attempts to Cross the Berlin Wall with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. The East German guards who patrolled the numerous watchtowers along the famous Berlin Wall had orders to shoot to kill anyone who attempted to scale the boundary from East Berlin to its Western neighbor. Still, there are many tales of daring escapes from East Berlin to West Berlin throughout the wall’s history. The Berlin Wall spread all the way around West Berlin. It stretched for about 96 miles, with 27 miles between East and West Berlin. More than a wall, fortified fencing and watch-towers also made up what we refer to as the “Berlin Wall”. Escape over it from communist East Berlin to the capitalist West was a dream of many Germans. But escape past the Wall was incredibly difficult. As an armed border with 302 watch-towers, there was barely a moment when a person could scale the Wall and make it to the West before being noticed and shot by border guards. But why did East Berliners want to escape to the west? Fall of The Berlin Wall: History , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 8min
Learn about the Fall of the Berlin Wall with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. The Berlin Wall stood as a boundary in the German capital for 28 years, 2 months and 26 days. It symbolized the split between not only West and East Berlin, but Western and Eastern Europe as a whole. It was an international symbol of the Cold War and represented an ideological divide between capitalism in the west and communism in the east. Then, on a momentous November day in 1989, the Berlin Wall was dramatically torn down. With its fall tumbled down the idea of a divided Europe. When it had stood, the Berlin Wall had kept East Berliners from moving from the communist zone of the city to capitalist West Berlin. To those who watched events from the west, the Berlin Wall symbolized the restrictions of those living under a communist government. After World War Two, the Soviet Union imposed communist governments in many Eastern European countries. And to keep western capitalism out of these places, the Soviets built a barrier between communist eastern countries and capitalist western ones. This barrier, which was ideological as well as physical, was termed the “iron curtain” by the west. The barrier between West and East Berlin was known as the “Berlin Wall”. The Collapse: The Accidental Opening of the Berlin Wall , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 498min
The Berlin Wall was erected in 1961 to end all traffic between the city’s two halves: the democratic west and the communist east. The iconic symbol of a divided Europe, the Wall became a focus of western political pressure on East Germany; as Ronald Reagan’s famously said in a 1987 speech in Berlin, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” But as award-winning historian Mary Sarotte shows in The Collapse , the opening of the Wall on November 9, 1989 was not, as is commonly believed, the East German government’s deliberate concession to outside influence. It was an accident. A carelessly worded memo written by mid-level bureaucrats, a bumbling press conference given by an inept member of the East German Politburo, the negligence of government leaders, the bravery of ordinary people in East and West Berlin - these combined to bring about the end of nearly 40 years of oppression, fear, and enmity in divided Berlin. When the news broke, Washington and Moscow could only stand by and watch as Tom Brokaw and other journalists narrated the televised broadcast of this critical moment in the thawing of the cold war. Sarotte opens her story in the months leading up to that fateful day. Following East German dissidents, she shows how their efforts coalesced around opposition to the regime’s restrictions on foreign travel. The city of Leipzig, close to the border with Czechoslovakia, became a hothouse of activism, and protests there quickly grew into massive demonstrations. The East German Politburo hoped to limit its citizens’ knowledge of these marches, but two daring dissidents, East Berliners Aram Radomski and Siegbert Schefke, managed to evade the Stasi and film the largest of them from a church tower. To Save A City: The Berlin Airlift, 1948-1949 [Illustrated Edition] (eBook, ePUB)
Includes 30 IllustrationsIn this expert survey Air Force Historian Robert Miller explores the Epic story of the Berlin Airlift, the confrontation of Democracy and Communism as the world teetered on the brink of the Third World War.The Berlin blockade (24 June 1948;-12 May 1949) was one of the first major international crises of the Cold War. During the multinational occupation of post-World War II Germany, the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway, road, and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under allied control. The Soviets offered to drop the blockade if the Western Allies withdrew the newly introduced Deutschmark from West Berlin. In response, the Western Allies organised the Berlin airlift to carry supplies to the people in West Berlin. Aircrews from the United States Air Force, the British Royal Air Force, the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force, the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and the South African Air Force flew over 200,000 flights in one year, providing up to 8,893 tons of necessities daily, such as fuel and food, to the Berliners. Neither side wanted a war; the Soviets did not disrupt the airlift.By the spring of 1949 the airlift was clearly succeeding, and by April it was delivering more cargo than had previously been transported into the city by rail. On 11 May 1949, the USSR lifted the blockade of West Berlin. The Berlin Crisis of 1948-1949 served to highlight competing ideological and economic visions for post-war Europe, particularly Germany. The clash ultimately led to the division of that country into East and West and to the division of Berlin itself.- Shop: buecher
