Seit der Gründung hat sich sich das KW Institute for Contemporary Art als lebendiger Ort für progressive kreative Praktiken in der internationalen Kunstwelt etabliert und diese durch die entscheidenden kuratorischen Handschriften von Klaus Biesenbach, Anselm Franke, Susanne Pfeffer, Krist Gruijthuijsen u. a. geprägt. Das Avantgardeprogramm von Ausstellungen und transdisziplinären Veranstaltungen schafft seit den Gründungstagen einen signifikanten Beitrag zum Diskurs der zeitgenössischen Kunst und ihrem Wirkungsradius über die eigenen disziplinären Grenzen der Kunst hinaus. Dazu gehören die seit 1997 initiierte Berlin Biennale für zeitgenössische Kunst und eine umfangreiche Ausstellungspraxis der KW mit wegweisenden Projekten wie die Berliner Chronik (1994), Stand der Dinge (2000), Zur Vorstellung des Terrors: Die RAF-Ausstellung (2005), One on One (2012-13) und The Making of Husbands: Christina Ramberg in Dialogue (2019-2020).
