The appearance of Roman soldiers in the 3rd century AD has long been a matter of debate and uncertainty, largely thanks to the collapse of central control and perpetual civil war between the assassination of Severus Alexander in 235 and the accession of the great Diocletian in 284. During those years no fewer than 51 men were proclaimed as emperors, some lasting only a few days. Despite this apparent chaos, however, the garrisons of the Western Provinces held together, by means of localized organization and the recruitment of 'barbarians' to fill the ranks. They still constituted an army in being when Diocletian took over and began the widespread reforms that rebuilt the Empire - though an Empire that their forefathers would hardly have recognized. Fully illustrated with specially chosen colour plates, this book reveals the uniforms, equipment and deployments of Roman soldiers in the most chaotic years of the Empire.

Development of a genomic approach for the study of Coryneform bacteria

Bacterial collections are important resources of microorganisms, however, the potential that genomics has to offer remains to be realised as it is still virtually absent in any study involving strain collections. This feature thus framed the experimental objectives for this study, whose aim was to define the most comprehensive way to apply genomic based methods (sequencing and bioinformatics) to a strain collection in order to solve the critical problem of microbial identification and classification. The study selected the Coryneform group of organisms, as it constituted a heterogeneous bacterial population, posing a unique technical challenge, containing bacteria which are normally difficult to classify using traditional approaches. Initially a preliminary analysis was performed on the Corynebacterium genus. A total of 207 bacteria was studied. Strategies used included 16S rRNA sequencing of all isolates together with multilocus sequence typing for strains of the same species.the 16S rRNA gene sequencing strategies developed were applied to surface cheese samples in an attempt to identify any coryneform bacteria present.

Dublin

Prevalence of hearing loss in older adults

Hearing is a process that allows us to perceive and interpret sound stimuli from the external environment, it can be affected by genetic, congenital, biological, anatomical, environmental aspects, among others, which can occur at any stage of the life cycle, generating a unilateral or bilateral condition with different types and degrees of hearing loss. METHODOLOGY: Descriptive and retrospective study. The sample is constituted by 126 users of the Audicfacial hearing center of the city of Cuenca, to obtain the data a review of the data was carried out, from the period 2018 - 2020, in users aged 65 years and older who present hypoacusis.RESULTS: 57.1% of women presented hypoacusis, the age range with the greatest predominance oscillates between 65 and 75 years with 54.8%, in which sensorineural hypoacusis stands out with 74.6%, moderate degree with 42.9% and bilateral extension with 87.3%. Finally, in relation to occupation, "others" predominated with a predominance of moderate sensorineural hearing loss with 27%.

This book demonstrates how English has been newly constituted as a dominant language in post-market reform India through the fervent aspirations of non-elites and the zealous reforms of English Language Teaching experts. The most recent spread of English in India has been through low-fee private schools, which are perceived as dubious yet efficient. The book is an ethnography of mothering at one such low-fee private school and its neighboring state-funded school. It demonstrates that political economic transitions, experienced as radical social mobility, fuelled intense desire for English schooling. Rather than English schooling leading to social mobility, new experiences of mobility necessitated English schooling. At the same time, experts have responded to the unanticipated spread of English by transforming it from a second language to a first language, and earlier hierarchies have been produced anew as access to English democratized.
