In 1876, Poland's leading actress, Helena Modrzejewska, accompanied by family and friends, emigrated to Southern California to establish a utopian commune that soon failed. Within a year Modrzejewska made her debut in the title role of Adrienne Lecouvreur at San Francisco's California Theatre. Power and Seduction
This volume opens a new series by the Don Juan Archiv Wien: Don Juan Studies, dedicated to the topic of Don Juan as a fascinating cultural subject of literature and theatre from the early 17th century up to the present day. Da Ponte's and Mozart's Don Giovanni (Prague 1787) was performed in New York for the first time in 1826, twenty-one years after Da Ponte emigrated to the United States. In that same year in New York Da Ponte published Tre drammi, namely Don Giovanni, Figaro (Vienna 1786) and Axur (Vienna 1788), whose libretti explore the themes of power and seduction in different and subtle ways. This book investigates the dissemination and cultural transfer of these three operas, and especially the way in which Don Giovanni was received in North America, with particular attention to the specific social and cultural conditions Da Ponte encountered in the New World.- Shop: buecher

The Giraffe's Neck , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 397min
Adaptation is everything. Inge Lohmark is well aware of that; after all, she's been teaching biology for more than 30 years. But nothing will change the fact that her school is going to be closed in four years: in this dwindling town in the eastern German countryside, there are fewer and fewer children. Inge's husband, who was a cattle inseminator before the reunification, is now breeding ostriches. Their daughter, Claudia, emigrated to the U.S. years ago and has no intention of having children. Everyone is resisting the course of nature that Inge teaches every day in class. When Inge finds herself experiencing intense feelings for a 9th-grade girl, her biologically determined worldview is shaken. And in increasingly outlandish ways, she tries to save what can no longer be saved. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Billie Fulford-Brown. John Muir: Magnificent Tramp , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 339min
In 1849, 11-year-old John Muir emigrated from Scotland to America. Here, he rose from farmer and sawmill worker to become a noted authority on the botany, glaciers, and forestry of the nation's wilderness. Best known for his long association with the Yosemite Valley and Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, Muir also explored the southern states, Alaska, the Great Basin, and the Mojave Desert. His studies took him around the world and generated volumes of poetic, evocative writings. As America expanded relentlessly westward, Muir witnessed the plunder and exploitation of the land and became a driving force in efforts to protect the natural world. A modest and private man, married and father of two daughters, his conservationist views forced himinto battle with powerful political and industrial interests. He influenced four U.S. presidents to sponsor legislation that protected forests and established or expanded America's national parks. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Rusty Nelson.
