The Morphogenesis of the Norwegian Educational System (eBook, ePUB)
Based in the philosophy of critical realism, this book employs a range of Margaret Archer's theoretical concepts to investigate temporal and spatial aspects of Norwegian education. Stemming from Archer's engagement as visiting professor from 2017 to 2019 in the Department of Education at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, the book explores a new area for critical realist theorizing by asking how different spatial contexts affect the workings of the system. The various chapters employ diverse sets of Archer's theoretical concepts; from morphogenetic cycles and the emergence of educational systems at the macro level, to the exercise of reflexivity among individual school leaders and students at the micro level. In contrast to the focus on educational homogeneity and similarity among Nordic and Scandinavian countries, and promotion of the conception of the 'Nordic Model', this book draws attention to differences between these nations as well as regional differences within Norway. As such, it will appeal to scholars with interests in education, sociology, critical realism, educational sciences and pedagogy, education history and political science as well those with a specific interest in the Nordic region.- Shop: buecher

Uncultivated: Wild Apples, Real Cider, and the Complicated Art of Making a Living , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 699min
Long before the advent of conventional farming methods - which have focused on constant growth, human intervention, and genetic homogeneity - the apple had already grown to become the ubiquitous all-American symbol it is today. Known for their hardiness, ability to adapt to new environments, natural diversity, and plentiful bounty, wildly grown apples were once known as “America’s fruit” throughout the trading world. Yet those apple trees - known as pippins - have nearly vanished from the American agricultural landscape, and so, too, have the complexities and nuances of wild apples and their cider. Andy Brennan, founder of Aaron Burr Cidery in upstate New York, has been making a case for their return. In his new book, Uncultivated: Wild Apples, Real Cider, and the Complicated Art of Making a Living, Brennan’s hero is the tenacious wild apple and the superior cider it produces. In candid and at times philosophical prose, he shares his decades-long experience working with naturalized trees - from discovering new tastes and textures to understanding how the wild apple tree guided him toward a successful, environmentally conscious business. At the heart of his story is Brennan’s faith in nature, and its unfailing ability to deliver us from our own mistakes.PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio. ungekürzt. The Dreamcatcher Fallacy: The Dreamcatcher Fallacy Cycle, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 516min
For generations, the Company has produced made-to-order men and women for the jobs humankind itself no longer wishes to fill - soldiers, scientists, and administrators. It depends on the very predictability of what it creates, as does Earth and the far-flung galactic agricultural colonies. But not everyone finds such homogeneity comforting. Joshua 1011 is the living masterpiece of a genius with a singular mission and vision - bring back the ancient genotypes that once were the backbone of creative life. Raised in the tight-knit social structure of the Company's military line, silently protected by its highest administrator and yet also targeted by those who are threatened by his differences, Joshua must learn what it means to carry not only Administrator and Tech gifts within himself, but also how to simply survive as an individual in a sea of look-alike brothers-in-arms. Matthew Dennon is a simple man, married early into the Core, the ruling caste of the natural humans of Earth. But as he digs into the secrets kept by the Company, and deals with the repercussions of changes made to his own DNA long ago, he finds himself alone, divorced from the protective rings of power, fighting alongside Joshua. Together, they will take a stand against the systems that cage them and the unfolding nightmare unleashed by Joshua's troubled creator. And as a real love blossoms between himself and the young soldier, they will face decisions that affect not only themselves, but also the entire string of worlds that support the delicate thing called humanity. ungekürzt. Systems Thinking and Chaos: Simple Scientific Analysis on How Chaos and Unpredictability Shape Our World (And How to Find Order in It) , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 149min
Understand the complex human factors challenges associated with change. Increase your tolerance to uncertainty. “Chaos: When the present determines the future, but the approximate present does not approximately determine the future." (Edward Lorenz)We can encounter chaos in every system around us - even the smallest and simplest ones. Any system can fall into chaos, which prevents us to accurately predict its behavior. Even a small change in the initial conditions can lead to unexpectedly large-scale consequences. Therefore, we can often enter in panic, blame actors for events they are not responsible for, and our sense of security in the world can generally decrease. This book is a primer to nonlinear system dynamics and chaos where the author presents analytical methods through real-life examples and easy mathematical calculations. By the time you listen to this book, you’ll understand why some events are out of human control, but there are still ways to manage and live with unpredictability and chaos. The book is structured systematically, starting with differentiating linear and nonlinear systems, first-order differential equations, bifurcations, phase transition analysis, oscillations, chaos, iterated maps, period doubling, fractals, and strange attractors.Systems Thinking and Chaos sheds light to why sometimes life sometimes unfolds counterintuitively to expectations, how small changes can lead to tremendously big ones over time.Learn the difference between linear and nonlinear systems.Deepen your knowledge about the additivity and homogeneity principle. How to use synergy and interference in real life? What are feedback loops and how can they generate equilibrium?Explore and fix the “problems that never seem to go away”.Learn about the importance of exponentials, power law, and long tail distribution.Detailed introduc ungekürzt. Reset: My Fight for Inclusion and Lasting Change , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 640min
The “necessary and incisive” (Roxane Gay) account of the discrimination case that “has blown open a conversation about the status of women” in the workplace (The New York Times)Shortlisted for the 2017 Financial Times and Mckinsey Business Book of The YearNamed a Best Fall Book by Elle and Bustle In 2015, Ellen K. Pao sued a powerhouse Silicon Valley venture capital firm, calling out workplace discrimination and retaliation against women and other underrepresented groups. Her suit rocked the tech world - and exposed its toxic culture and its homogeneity. Her message overcame negative PR attacks that took aim at her professional conduct and her personal life, and she won widespread public support - Time hailed her as “the face of change.” Though Pao lost her suit, she revolutionized the conversation at tech offices, in the media, and around the world. In Reset, she tells her full story for the first time. The daughter of immigrants, Pao was taught that through hard work she could achieve her dreams. She earned multiple Ivy League degrees, worked at top start-ups, and in 2005 was recruited by Kleiner Perkins, arguably the world’s leading venture capital firm at the time. In many ways, she did everything right, and yet she and other women and people of color were excluded from success - cut out of decisive meetings and email discussions, uninvited to CEO dinners and lavish networking trips, and had their work undercut or appropriated by male executives. It was time for a system reset. After Kleiner, Pao became CEO of reddit, where she took forceful action to change the status quo for the company and its product. She banned revenge porn and unauthorized nude photos - an action other large media sites later followed - and shut down parts of reddit over online harassment. She and seven other women tech leaders formed Project Include, an award-winning nonprofit for accelerating diversity ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Emily Woo Zeller. Sampling of Heterogeneous and Dynamic Material Systems (eBook, PDF)
Although sampling errors inevitably lead to analytical errors, the importance of sampling is often overlooked. The main purpose of this book is to enable the reader to identify every possible source of sampling error in order to derive practical rules to (a) completely suppress avoidable errors, and (b) minimise and estimate the effect of unavoidable errors. In short, the degree of representativeness of the sample can be known by applying these rules. The scope covers the derivation of theories of probabilistic sampling and of bed-blending from a complete theory of heterogeneity which is based on an original, very thorough, qualitative and quantitative analysis of the concepts of homogeneity and heterogeneity. All sampling errors result from the existence of one form or another of heterogeneity. Sampling theory is derived from the theory of heterogeneity by application of a probabilistic operator to a material whose heterogeneity has been characterized either by a simple scalar (a variance: zero-dimensional batches) or by a function (a variogram: one-dimensional batches). A theory of bed-blending (one-dimensional homogenizing) is then easily derived from the sampling theory. The book should be of interest to all analysts and to those dealing with quality, process control and monitoring, either for technical or for commercial purposes, and mineral processing. Although this book is primarily aimed at graduates, large portions of it are suitable for teaching sampling theory to undergraduates as it contains many practical examples provided by the author's 30-year experience as an international consultant. The book also contains useful source material for short courses in Industry.- Shop: buecher
