A Macat Analysis of W. E .B. Du Bois' The Souls of Black Folk New York and London: W. W. Norton and Company, 1999 Published by sociologist and historian W. E. B. Du Bois in 1903, this series of essays addresses the plight of African Americans facing everyday racism in the United States at the turn of the 20th century. It has become one of the most important works on race and identity across the world. Du Bois sets out to explain how black interaction with a white world has caused psychological anguish and argues that blacks should demand total equality in their daily realities. He opposes the views of other black intellectuals that some inequality is acceptable in exchange for basic education and legal rights. The Souls of Black Folk highlights the way Jim Crow laws (designed above all to make it impossible for blacks to vote) kept blacks in conditions they thought they had escaped when slavery was abolished in 1865. Looking at key issues from political, economic, and social perspectives, The Souls of Black Folk profoundly influenced the Civil Rights Movement in the US and inspired postcolonial thinking worldwide. ungekürzt. Politics is one of the first books ever to investigate the concept of political philosophy. Written by the famous Greek thinker Aristotle in the fourth century BCE, it focuses on trying to understand how best to create political communities that support, serve, and improve their citizens. Aristotle investigates a number of different areas before drawing conclusions. These include an examination of existing regimes to see which are best, a look at political theories, and even an exploration of the systems of education. He comes to the conclusion that people form political groups because they want to be better human beings. The state should therefore support them in their quest by establishing a good constitution and making laws prudently. Politics was the starting point for political science studies as we know them. Not only are outcomes observed, but also the reasons behind those outcomes are examined. Aristotle's book continues to be useful to political theorists over 2,000 years after it was written. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Macat.com. How many books can claim to be so influential as to inspire the development of a whole school of thought? The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle's Metaphysics did exactly that, laying the foundations for a new branch of philosophy - metaphysics - concerned with the cause and nature of being. Aristotle questioned his teacher Plato's renowned theory of forms. Plato argued that everything in the world is nothing more than an imperfect representation of its perfect form. Aristotle, however, focused on the reality of the material world. He argued that anything that can be asserted about anything that exists is due to its actual existence. In other words its substance is in its present form. But Aristotle went further. In analyzing this substance, he then introduced more philosophical ideas - like the "unmoved mover", potentiality, and actuality - that also became hugely important in their own rights. Ancient philosophers and contemporary thinkers have all cited Aristotle's ideas as an inspiration, which is why Metaphysics is still such an important work today. ungekürzt. Language: English. Originally written as 13 individual books around 397 CE, Augustine of Hippo's Confessions is one of the most referenced works in the Western literary tradition. Augustine lived from 354-430 CE, and the work is in part an autobiography. But it also tells us much about the period in which he lived. The first nine books draw a compelling narrative of the first 43 years of Augustine's life, which were spent in North Africa and Italy. In the 10th book, Augustine uses these experiences as a meditation on the nature of memory. Finally, he ranges more widely, using the last three books to comment on the Bible's book of Genesis. It is a measure of his immense intellectual range that he can switch from the personal to the philosophical and finally to the contemplative in this great work. Augustine's title expresses something of the double meaning of the work itself. In a seminal article from 1957, Joseph Ratzinger (eventually Pope Benedict XVI) showed that the title functions to express the work both as a "confession" of past sins and as a "confession" of praise for God. Confessions is an intricate work of literature, long recognized for its poetic prose and penetrating psychological insight into the trials and satisfactions to be found in the act of confession. Augustine's work has stood the test of time and continues to be taught and read/listened to all over the world. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Macat.com. What is justice? How should an individual and a society behave justly? And how do they learn how to do so? These are just some of the core questions that Plato's The Republic considers. An extraordinarily ambitious work, Republic has made important contributions to many branches of modern philosophy. The work unfolds as a series of conversations in which participants set out a number of different theories of justice, and then imagine how these theories might become reality within the political structure of a city. In examining justice, Plato investigates an enormous range of questions in the areas of ethics, politics, and even the nature of existence itself. Although written nearly 2,500 years ago, the influence of Republic is still felt today. Many consider it to be Plato's most important work, and it has played a key role in the birth and development of political philosophy, influencing the work of many important thinkers, from Niccolò Machiavelli to John Rawls. ungekürzt. Most likely written between 170 and 180 CE, Meditations is a remarkable work, a unique insight into the thinking of one of the most conscientious and able Roman emperors, Marcus Aurelius, who ruled at the apex of Roman might in the late second century CE. It was never intended to be widely circulated. Indeed, it was almost unknown until the 16th century. The work is like a series of jottings, written for its author's own improvement; it has no formal structure and its arguments follow no obvious pattern. Yet it has an immediacy that makes it one of the best and most accessible accounts of what is known as Stoic philosophy. Its distinctive approach, and its belief that philosophy can serve as a practical way of living a more balanced life, chime perfectly with our modern-day concerns. Meditations has won many admirers, including former US president Bill Clinton and Wen Jiabao, premier of China from 2003 to 2013. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Macat.com. First published in 1651, Leviathan drove important discussions about where kings get their authority to rule and what those kings must, in turn, do for their people. This is known as the "social contract". Thomas Hobbes wrote the book while exiled from his native England following the English Civil War that unseated King Charles I. In the face of England's radical - if temporary - rejection of its monarchy, Hobbes wanted to explain why it was important to have a strong central government, which in his time meant having a sovereign at its head. Asking the listener to imagine what society would be like without a state, Hobbes justifies why the people of a nation should pledge their allegiance to a government. He argues that society needs a state at its organizational heart, in politics, religion, the courts, and education. Otherwise there is no order, and "the war of all against all" will follow. Leviathan remains central to discussions of political philosophy to this day. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Macat.com. Advertisements for soap. The image of a film star. The sight of a car as beautiful as a goddess. We accept all these common objects and experiences as normal parts of our lives and as timeless and universal as myth. But they are also carrying hidden messages that none of us even suspect, as Barthes demonstrates with a unique analysis of the signs that generate meanings and assumptions we all take for granted. These things have been "taken out of history" so that their hidden cultural meanings can be accepted without question. And those hidden cultural meanings just so happen to reflect and promote the values of the people who just so happen to be benefitting the most from the economic and social system of capitalism. Mythologies is a playful, listenable analysis of culture and of the way that meaning itself is constructed and perceived, from the agile mind of a deeply influential scholar. ungekürzt.
