Johannes Brahms: Late Piano Pieces

Brahms composed his last four collections of works for the piano during the Summers of 1892 and 1893. Clara Schumann called this cycle of works "a treasury of masterpieces". This recording presents the three collections of Fantasies, Opus 116, Intermezzi, Opus 116 and Piano Pieces, Opus 118. The cycle of "Fantasies" in the Opus 116 are symphonic in character, with a more extroverted, energetic character. The 3 Intermezzo of Opus 117 are more intimate, on a much smaller scale than the more massive works of the Opus 116. Brahms called these three Intermezzi "the cradles of my sorrows" in a letter to Clara Schumann during their composition. These pieces were inspired by the Scottish poem "Lady Ann Bothwell's lament" as translated by Herder. It has been theorised that the third intermezzo was inspried by the poem "Victor Galbrfaith" by Longfellow. The six pieces of Opus 118 are more diverse in their atmospheres and forms (4 Intermezzi, a Ballade and a Romanze). Brahms was also at work on his series of works for the clarinet (two sonatas, the trio and the quintet)) at the same time he was working on this cycle, and it would seem there are stylistic similarities between these six pieces and the works for clarinet. The last Intermezzo (in the key of Eb minor) is a sort of long, tragic meditation which seems to be a cousin of the slow movements in the symphonies of Mahler. ============================================= Pianist Raj Bhimani's concerts are "virtuosic, heartfelt and eloquent," writes New York Times critic Michael Kimmelman. Time Out NY noted him for being a "gifted and highly expressive pianist." Mr. Bhimani performs regularly across North America and Europe. His performances have been broadcast on Indian National Radio and Television, Portuguese National Radio, and on WQXR and WHUS Radio in the United States. Recent New York performances include Merkin Concert Hall, the 92nd Street Y, St. Paul's Chapel, and Saint Peter's Church, where he performs frequently. Mr. Bhimani also appeared on the inaugural season of Baruch College's Engelman Recital Hall, where he returned recently with clarinetist Anna Maria Baeza and cellist Eliot Bailen, and at the Tenri Cultural Institute, where he performed with acclaimed mezzo-soprano Katherine Ciesinski. Additional successes include Montreal, La Jolla, and Idaho State University, where his playing was lauded for "combining a searching intellect with emotional sensitivity and drama." In Europe, Mr. Bhimani plays annually on the Atelier Concert Series at the American Church in Paris. He recently presented his 27th annual recital on that series. He has also performed at the Salle André Marchal in the same city. He has toured Portugal and Italy, and recently gave a highly celebrated concert in the Komitas Chamber Music Hall in Yerevan, Armenia. This past season Mr. Bhimani appeared for the second time at New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and has been invited back for the 2012-2013 season. In December he will be touring India, presenting concerts and masterclasses in different parts of that country. Mr. Bhimani is a champion of new music, and has developed particular expertise in French piano literature. He has worked closely with composer Henri Dutilleux, who declared him "a great artist who performs with sensitivity and intelligence." Composer Thérèse Brenet, moved by Mr. Bhimani's performance of her previous work, composed for him To the West Wind, which Mr. Bhimani premiered in 2001, Never, Never More, which he premiered in 2005, and Avec des éclats dorés d'éspérance, which was first heard in 2008. She recently completed Three Preludes, which had their first hearings in 2009. Mr. Bhimani has built a strong reputation as an educator and has taught at the 92nd Street Y School of Music, New York University and Concordia College. In addition to a very busy private studio in New York, he is in great demand across the country for his educational outreach programs, which include master classes, private coaching for both soloists and chamber ensembles, and lecture-demonstrations, as well as lectures on French piano literature. Mr. Bhimani's teaching methods establish a strong foundation of technical and musical skills, guiding students from beginners to concert-level performers, and he is a frequent judge and lecturer on piano pedagogy. He currently serves on the board of The Leschetizky Association, an organization committed to upholding the great pedagogue's ideals of beautiful tone production and musical integrity. Eugene Lavery B.Mus (Hons) Organist Eugene Lavery is currently a Masters student at The Juilliard School, New York, where he studies with Professor Paul Jacobs. Born in New Zealand, Mr. Lavery received his Bachelor of Music Degree with First Class Honors from the University of Auckland, where he studied with Dr. John Wells. Mr. Lavery also studied conducting with Associate Professor Karen Grylls and Harpsichord with James Tibbles as part of his Bachelor of Music Degree. Prior to moving to the United States of America, Mr. Lavery served as Assistant Organist at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Auckland, New Zealand where he recorded and launched his debut solo organ CD, Joie. Mr. Lavery served as organist for many high profile services at Holy Trinity Cathedral including the National Tsunami Memorial Service (January 2005) broadcast live on Radio New Zealand, and the First Eucharist of Christmas (December 2005) broadcast live on Television New Zealand. In June 2006, Mr. Lavery won the New Zealand Association of Organists' National Organ Competition held in Wellington, New Zealand. Mr. Lavery has given recitals in many notable venues in New Zealand and Australia including St. Paul's Cathedral, Wellington, New Zealand, Christchurch Cathedral, New Zealand, and St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney, Australia. Future performances include the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, New York, St. Thomas Church, New York, and St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York. A favorite with audiences for her sensitive and exciting interpretations, Ms. Serra-Brooks hails from a long line of Romantics. This is her third release on the Eroica label. Beverly Serra-Brooks Serra-Brooks, who has been performing on the professional stage for more than a decade, was recently named as "One of the World's 100 Best Classical Musicians" by the International Who's Who of Music and Musician's Board in Cambridge, England. She will receive the award at a ceremony in early Spring 2005 in Europe. Ms. Serra-Brooks was especially honored by the nomination since it is one that the board in England decides on their own after reviewing a musician's work and visiting 'live' performances, rather than a competition in which the musicians vie. Ms. Serra-Brooks will also be published by the International Biographical Center, and her recording, reviews and biography will be placed in the Museum of International Musicians in London, England. Kevin Class presently serves as Director of Collaborative Piano at the University of Tennessee. Prior to this appointment he served on the Opera Studies faculty of Indiana University where he administered and served as Music Director and Conductor of the Martina Arroyo Opera Program. Born in Belgium, Kevin acquired a diverse musical education in both Europe and the U.S. including studies with pianists Murray Perahia, Gyorgy Sebok, Daniel Blumenthal and Ralph Votapek. As a pianist, since his Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 19, Kevin has been a frequent soloist in such venues as Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Geneva's Victoria Hall and Vienna's Musikverein. Following several seasons of annual performances in The Netherlands and Belgium, including the complete piano sonatas of Schubert in Amsterdam, Kevin was named a Fellow of the Flemish Community by the Belgian government in 1998. In addition to work as a piano soloist, Kevin has been long active as a conductor. Kevin most recently served on the Opera Studies faculty of Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music where he was Music Director and Conductor for Martina Arroyo's Advanced Opera Program. Prior to that, Kevin spent four seasons as Resident Conductor and Guest Music Director of the Illinois Opera Theatre at the University of Illinois where he conducted numerous productions ranging from the operas of Mozart's to French Grand Opera. As conductor of the Theatre's Workshop productions, Class presided over performances of a series of American operas including Kurt Weill's Street Scene, Hugo Weisgall's Six Characters in Search of an Author and Russell Smith's Unicorn in the Garden. With more than 40 operas in his active repertoire, conducting activities have found him on the podium at the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden and the National Opera Studio in London, as well as the National Opera Theatre La Monnaie in Brussels and was Principal Guest Conductor for Opera Illinois (Peoria) where he conducted Puccini's Il Trittico to critical and audience acclaim. In orchestral repertoire he has appeared in front of the Chicago Youth Symphony, Northern Illinois Philharmonic, Peabody Conservatory Orchestra, the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, and as Resident Conductor of the Illinois New Music Ensemble. As a collaborative pianist, Kevin has long been active in both instrumental and vocal repertoire. In addition to leading a course on the violin sonatas of Mozart, performances this season also include recitals with cellist Wesley Baldwin and violinist Miro Hristov. A continuing project includes a partnership with mezzo-soprano Emily Langford Johnson presenting Frederic Rzewski's monumental monodrama Antigone-Legende. This work illustrates Kevin's commitment to contemporary music that has demonstrated by a number of world premiers of new works by composers such as Gunther Schuller, William Albright and William Bolcom. Kevin combines his multiple specializations into an annual residency in Asia where he leads masterclasses and workshops for pianists, accompanists, singers and conductors. He is also Music Director/Conductor and teacher of Asia's foremost training program for opera singers and conductors: Nami Island Opera Young Artist's Program.

American Recital

After studies with Alain Marion in Paris and James Pappoutsakis at the New England Conservatory of Music, flutist Angela Koregelos made her professional solo debut in London's Wigmore Hall where the Times hailed 'the freshness of her tone and the naturalness of her playing.' She returned to the United States and became one of the youngest principal players of the Oakland Symphony where she was often featured as a soloist. She has performed and recorded with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and the Skywalker Symphony where she has participated in numerous projects for film and television. She currently teaches flute and chamber music at Mills College, Oakland, and conducts masterclasses both in the U.S. and abroad. Ms. Koregelos currently performs on a flute made for her by her father. Pianist Julie Steinberg is an active soloist and chamber musician, having appeared with the San Francisco, Oakland, and Berekely Symphonies, where she premiered works by Ernst Bacon and Olivier Messiaen. She has been an assisting artist in masterclasses with Jean-Pierre Rampal and Mstislav Rostropovich and has been heard regularly with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and Chamber Music West. Together with violinist David Abel and percussionist William Winant, she is a member of the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio wich has received critical acclaim throughout the United States, Japan, and Canada. Ms. Steinberg holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stanford University with a specialty in Twentieth Century Music and is currently on the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley.

A diverse performer with extensive solo and ensemble experience, Audrey Cupples has traveled throughout the United States, performing in such prestigious concert halls as New York's Carnegie Hall and Boston's Symphony Hall. Ms. Cupples was also part of an historic 18-day concert tour of the Soviet Union in 1990 that took her to Kiev, Moscow, Leningrad, L'vov, and Minsk. In 1992, she traveled to England for another concert tour that took her to the White Cliffs of Dover and London, where the final concert was given at Royal Albert Hall. In 2001, Audrey had the opportunity to perform in Lucerne, Switzerland at the WASBE convention. During her career, she has appeared with celebrities Marvin Hamlisch, Theresa Stratas, Lynn Redgrave, Shirley Jones, Aretha Franklin, Trisha Yearwood, Al Gallodoro, and Benny Carter, has performed under famous conductors including Leonard Slatkin, John Williams, Gunther Schuller, Frederick Fennell and Donald Hunsberger, and has performed for many famous dignitaries including the late President Reagan,the first and second President Bush, President Clinton, the late Yitzak Rabin, Russian Federation President Boris Yeltsin and South Africa's President Nelson Mandella. Ms. Cupples is also the baritone saxophonist with the East Coast Saxophone Quartet, who in 1995 released their first album, "Americana Suite." Audrey has appeared with the National Gallery Orchestra, the Arlington Symphony, and the McLean Orchestra and has presented clinics and masterclasses at various universities and conventions to include the Eastman School of Music, Northwestern, Loyola, All-Eastern, Mid-Western, and the Saxophone Symposium. In 1999, Audrey released her first solo album, "Sunshine and Tears," featuring a variety of styles, colors, and emotions. A 1986 graduate of the Eastman School of Music and a recipient of the prestigious Performer's Certificate, she played principal saxophone on Wynton Marsalis' Grammy-nominated 'Carnaval' album recorded with the Eastman Wind Ensemble. In 2000, Audrey received her master's degree in music from the University of Maryland, College Park. Since 1988, Ms. Cupples has been the first and only woman saxophonist in 'The President's Own' United States Marine Band, where she has been a featured soloist on both alto and soprano saxophone. In 2001, she was invited to become a Yamaha Artist, writing articles for the Yamaha Educators Series and giving recitals, masterclasses, and clinics across the country. In 2002, Audrey was a featured saxophonist on the cover of 'The Saxophone Journal' giving an in-depth interview about herself and her career. She received her Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Maryland in 2008.

Robert Drew, Classical Guitarist Robert Drew was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia (Canada) and raised on the South Shore. After graduating from Dalhousie University's Music program, Robert relocated to Charlottetown Prince Edward Island with his wife, fellow classical guitarist Jennifer Barrett-Drew. Currently he is the co-owner of Fretworks Guitar Studio in Charlottetown and along with his wife they have celebrated it's eighth successful year as an instructional studio for guitar and piano. While Robert is the principal guitar instructor at Fretworks Guitar Studio, he is also involved with the Dept. Of Psychology at the University of Prince Edward Island. As the Research and Multi-media Technician with the Auditory Perception and Music Cognition Laboratory, Robert aids in the design, development and implementation of Music related Psychology experiments and aids in related research. In addition to Robert's roles at the university and at Fretworks, he has released a full length CD of his wife's compositions for solo guitar and acts as sole editor of all of her works for classical guitar. Robert has had an active role in performing throughout Prince Edward Island in both as a soloist and with various ensembles. These ensembles have ranged from Duos and Trios to his position in the Strathgartney Chamber Orchestra. As a result of his ongoing performance engagements he was honored with nominations for Classical Musician of the Year at the 2002, 2003 and 2004 Prince Edward Island Music Awards. Robert has been a featured performer at both the East Coast Music Awards and the Contact East Conference and a soloist at many festivals and events throughout the Maritimes. Robert has attended and performed in masterclasses and workshops with Alvaro Pierri, Pavel Steidl, Scott Tennant and Bill Kannengeiser (of the LA Guitar Quartet) and Paul O'Dette. --------------- Jennifer Barrett-Drew, Composer: J.R Barrett-Drew was born in Toronto and was raised in Bedford Nova Scotia (Canada). After receiving her music education from Dawson College in Montreal, the Royal Conservatory of Music and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Barrett-Drew relocated to Prince Edward Island with her husband, fellow classical guitarist Robert Drew. At that time the two officially opened Fretworks Guitar Studio which has since provided instruction in classical guitar, piano, music theory and music for young children. During that time the couple has had two children. In December 2001, Barrett-Drew received 'First-Place' in the international composition competition which was held at the eighth annual guitar festival 'Renaissance of the Guitar' organized by Ihar Shoshyn and Victor Kiyenia in Gomel, Belarus. The competition was for the best guitar miniature written for solo classical guitar. The title of the work was 'The Troll.' The piece was performed at the festival and was published in Eastern Europe in an anthology of miniatures for the classical guitar. Barrett-Drew's compositions have been featured at the East Coast Music Awards (2003) and The Contact East Conference (2003) and at numerous festivals and events throughout the Maritimes. September 2003 marked the release of a CD titled 'Ocean Suite', a collection of Barrett-Drew's compositions for solo classical guitar performed by Robert Drew.

Collusion Music Australia Music by Australian composers Green, Hawkins, Davidson, Ball, Brophy, Sabin and Twist. Collusion, also known as Collusion Music Australia continues in the development of creative and unique performance practise of chamber music in Australia since it's inception in 2002. For 10 years the ensemble has consistently performed 20th and 21st century art music with or without visual collaboration. Their resident choreographer is Gareth Belling, whom directed/choreographed Collusion's full length Ballet 'Transient Beauty' for the Restrung Festival in 2012. Susan Hawkins, resident composer for Collusion was the musical director and composer. Reviewer Mat Foley stated, 'In your face, it is. In your mind, it gets.' In Collusion's vast and impressive repertoire, music from Messiaen to Hindemith, Takemitsu to Australia's Andrew Schultz, Nigel Sabin, and Nigel Westlake engage large audiences. 2013 sees Collusion invited to perform at the World Clarinet Fest' in Assisi Italy, The Queensland Music Festival, The Australia Saxophone and Clarinet Convention Sydney, and will take up a position as an Ensemble in Residence at Griffith University's Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Collusion's home city Brisbane, Australia. The ensemble has also riveted audiences at the Judith Wright Centre for Contemporary Arts, The Brisbane Powerhouse, Chapel on Chapel Melbourne, Fireworks Art Gallery, The Queensland Art Gallery and at the University of Queensland and Southern Queensland, and the North Queensland Centre for Music. Venue themed performances, collaborations with performance and visual artists at nightclubs, showrooms, professional ballet studios, school classrooms, churches, online, on a river bank, as well as at Concert Halls, have visually and aurally inspired audiences (including up to 20,000 school children per year from 2008) to digest many different styles of art music composition. Benjamin Greaves (violinist): is the director and a founding member of Collusion Music Australia. A freelance musician, his speciality and training is chamber music, however he is also a freelance orchestral musician. He has performed for the Camerata of St John's Chamber Orchestra as principal 2nd violin and guest leader, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Queensland Ballet, X, Brisbane, Adelaide International Cabaret, and Queensland Festivals amongst others. He has broadcast solo for ABC Classic FM. He has collaborated with contemporary artists like Jazz Trio Elixir, Circa Australia, Human Nature, and even played in professional music theatre productions such as South Pacific for Opera Australia. He studied with Carmel Kaine and Mary Nemet, and has performed in masterclasses for Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Maxim Vengerov, Oleh Krysa and the Takacs String Quartet. Benjamin's continual attention to professional development as both a performer and pedagog has been supported in the past by Arts Queensland attending masterclasses of Rodney Friend. Brieley Cutting (pianist): was accepted into the Queensland Conservatorium at age 13 and graduated at 18 with first class honours and a performance of Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No.1 with the Queensland Conservatorium Orchestra, winning all major performance awards. Following this, Brieley studied at the Australian National Academy of Music, the Queensland Conservatorium with Natasha Vlassenko, and at the Royal College of Music in London where she graduated with Distinction. Brieley has performed as soloist with the Melbourne, Adelaide, and Queensland Symphony Orchestras, and received 2nd prize in the Kerikeri International Piano Competition 2010, and was keyboard winner of the Symphony Australia Young Performer's Awards in 2006. Brieley has been recipient of prestigious awards from the Tait Memorial Trust, Australian Music Foundation, and the David Paul Landa Scholarship. Currently pianist with Collusion, she is also Artistic Director of the Commercial Road Chamber Music Series, Brisbane and a doctoral student at Griffith University. Danielle Bentley (cellist): is a founding member of Collusion. As a freelance musician, she has performed in countless concerts and recording sessions around Australia with acclaimed classical, jazz and popular music ensembles and artists. These include: the Paris Opera Ballet, Opera Queensland, Opera Australia, Australian Ballet, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Camerata of St John's, Olivia Newton-John, Pete Murray, Harry Connick Jnr, Kanye West, Missy Higgins, Xavier Rudd, Kate Miller-Heidke, Pavarotti, Nigel Kennedy, Jon English, Il Divo, Jerry Lewis, Sarah Blasko, Hugh Jackman, Amici Forever, Kate Ceberano, Marcia Hines, Rolf Harris, Aled Jones, Tommy Lee - to name a few. Danielle is an academic, writer, poet and curator. She curates Restrung New Chamber Festival, which was the topic of her PhD exploring contemporary string practice and festival programming. Diana Tolmie (clarinettist): Woodwind specialist Diana Tolmie has had a wonderful time for the past 25 years with her career performing in a multitude of musical genres instigated by a Churchill Fellowship and a Queen Elizabeth Trust Award.&nbsp,Consistent session work has included the Queensland Symphony, Tasmanian Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic and Orchestra Victoria. With over 30 professional musicals under her belt allowing her national and international travel, she is unafraid to cross genres being as comfortable in Clint Allen's Frank Zappa Big Band as she is with the Doch Gypsy Orchestra and is employed for many contemporary and mainstream live, television and recording events. As lecturer of the saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University she also convenes the professional industry preparation strand My Life As A Musician and is founder and conductor of the Queensland Conservatorium Saxophone Orchestra which tours internationally. Les Chants de Nectaire 2

Nectaire, the old gardener (a fallen angel) from the novel 'The Revolt of the Angels' by Anatole France, plays the flute for his guests. He improvises so beautiful musical nature descriptions that even the animals come and listen to him. This scene inspired Charles Koechlin to write a three-volume cycle of 96 pieces for solo flute. The 77-year-old composer wrote this collection on the suggestion of the flutist Jean Merry. This CD contains volume 2 with the subtitle 'In the antique forest'. Charles Koechlin was born of Alsatian parentage in Paris in 1867. He gained his first musical impressions from his sister's piano playing. At an older age, he was deeply impressed by various musical works, so by Bach's 'Pfingstkantate'. Due to bad health, he had to abandon his studies in natural sciences at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. In 1890, he joined the composition class of Jules Massenet at the Paris Conservatoire. Further teachers were André Gédalge and Gabriel Fauré, whose incidental music to Maeterlincks 'Pelléas et Mélisande' was arranged for orchestra by Koechlin. He also met Claude Debussy and orchestrated his ballet 'Khamma'. When teaching classes himself, the composers Francis Poulenc and Darius Milhaud were among his students. All his life, he was very interested in numerous areas beyond music, such as literature, philosophy, astronomy, mathematics, cinema and travelling. These areas influenced his vast composition oeuvres. His works, however, hardly attracted interest during his lifetime, as he avoided coteries and salons which would have boosted his career, but preferred to keep his independence. Charles Koechlin died at the age of 83 years in his house in Le Canadel (Southern France) on New Year's Eve in 1950. Flutist Hans Balmer was born in Berne, Switzerland, in 1964. After passing the university-entrance diploma (matura), he attended the Conservatory there as a student of Christian Studler and was awarded the performance certificate 'with distinction' in 1990. He attended masterclasses by Aurèle Nicolet, Renate Greiss, Harrie Starreveld and Felix Renggli, amongst others. He received important musical influences from Siegfried Palm, Jörg Ewald Dähler and many more. The Bernese composer and pianist Urs Peter Schneider drew his attention to Charles Koechlin and since then, he is dealing intensively with his music. He gives concerts at home and abroad, does radio recordings with contemporary music and teaches at a music school in the Bernese Oberland.
