The routine traffic stop that ends in tragedy. The spy who spends years undetected at the highest levels of the Pentagon. The false conviction of Amanda Knox. Why do we so often get other people wrong? Why is it so hard to detect a lie, read a face or judge a stranger's motives? Through a series of encounters and misunderstandings - from history, psychology and infamous legal cases - Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual adventure into the darker side of human nature, where strangers are never simple and misreading them can have disastrous consequences. No one challenges our shared assumptions like Malcolm Gladwell. Here he uses stories of deceit and fatal errors to cast doubt on our strategies for dealing with the unknown, inviting us to rethink our thinking in these troubled times.

Many a confident urban lesbian in New York, San Francisco, and Chicago was once a wide-eyed newcomer. Every year thousands of young women arrive in these queer-friendly cities, seduced by downtown life and its erotic possibilities. In Where the Girls Are, D.L. King collects explicit memoirs and stories about these newly arrived country girls. Here are stories of first times, initiations, bars, dance clubs, and parties, reading (or misreading) the codes - and sometimes teaching those city girls a thing or two in the process. Featuring such stories as "My First Play Party", "Rush Hour", and "The Critic" from well-regarded authors of erotica Charlotte Dare, Rachel Kramer Bussel, Sophie Mouette, Lisabet Sarai, and others, Where the Girls Are burns with the immense heat of the furnace that lies just below the urban landscape. ungekürzt. New Testament scholar N. T. Wright reveals how we have been misreading the Gospels for centuries, powerfully restoring the lost central story of the scripture: that the coronation of God through the acts of Jesus was the climax of human history. Wright fills the gaps that centuries of misdirection have opened up in our collective spiritual story, tracing a narrative from Eden to Jesus to today. Wright's powerful rereading of the Gospels helps us realign the focus of our spiritual beliefs, which have for too long been focused on the afterlife. Instead, the forgotten story of the Gospels reveals why we should understand that our real charge is to sustain and cooperate with God's kingdom here and now. Echoing the triumphs of Simply Christian and The Meaning of Jesus, Wright's How God Became King is required reading for any Christians searching to understand their mission in the world today. ungekürzt. In Wealth, Poverty, and Politics, Thomas Sowell, one of the foremost conservative public intellectuals in the country, argues that political and ideological struggles have led to dangerous confusion about income inequality in America. Pundits and politically motivated economists trumpet ambiguous statistics and sensational theories while ignoring the true determinant of income inequality: the production of wealth. We cannot properly understand inequality if we focus exclusively on the distribution of wealth and ignore wealth-production factors such as geography, demography, and culture. Sowell contends that liberals have a particular interest in misreading the data and chastises them for using income inequality as an argument for the welfare state. Refuting Thomas Piketty, Paul Krugman, and others, Sowell draws on empirical data to show that the inequality is not nearly as extreme or sensational as we have been led to believe. Transcending partisanship through a careful examination of data, Wealth, Poverty, and Politics reveals the truth about the most explosive political issue of our time. ungekürzt. Language: English. What was clear to the original readers of Scripture is not always clear to us. Because of the cultural distance between the biblical world and our contemporary setting, we often bring modern Western biases to the text. For example: When Western readers hear Paul exhorting women to "dress modestly", we automatically think in terms of sexual modesty. But most women in that culture would never wear racy clothing. The context suggests that Paul is likely more concerned about economic modesty - that Christian women not flaunt their wealth through expensive clothes, braided hair, and gold jewelry. Some readers might assume that Moses married "below himself" because his wife was a dark-skinned Cushite. Actually, Hebrews were the slave race, not the Cushites, who were highly respected. Aaron and Miriam probably thought Moses was being presumptuous by marrying "above himself". Western individualism leads us to assume that Mary and Joseph traveled alone to Bethlehem. What went without saying was that they were likely accompanied by a large entourage of extended family. Biblical scholars Brandon O'Brien and Randy Richards shed light on the ways that Western readers often misunderstand the cultural dynamics of the Bible. They identify nine key areas where modern Westerners have significantly different assumptions about what might be going on in a text. Drawing on their own cross cultural experience in global mission, O'Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time, and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways. Getting beyond our own cultural assumptions is increasingly important for being Christians in our interconnected and globalized world. Learn to read Scripture as a member of the global body of Christ. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Allan Robertson. "I went to Central Park to find the place behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art where Jennifer Levin had been killed. It was bewildering to find a scene so beautiful ... to see the same sunlight pour down indifferently on the earth. As Ishowed the photograph of this site to friends, I realized that I was not alone in thinking of her when walking by the Met.It occurred to me that I held something within: a list of places that I cannot forget because of the tragedies that identifythem, and I began to wonder if each of us has such a list. I set out to photograph sites that were marked during mylifetime. Yet, there was something else that drew me to this work. I think of it as the question of knowability. Experiencehas taught me again and again that you can never know what lies beneath a surface or behind a façade. Our sense ofplace, our understanding of photographs of the landscape is inevitably limited and fraught with misreading."

Jeff James was one of the good White guys. At least, that's what he thought. But when he asked a Black friend how to become an antiracist, he had to think again. "Simple," she shot back, "get rid of Whiteness."Thus began his journey to discover, name, and dismantle the racial category that had defined and advantaged him for a lifetime. In Giving Up Whiteness, James leads listeners on an intimate, humble, and disorienting investigation of what it means to be White in 21st-century America. He begins to wonder what forces shape his own and other White people's choices: about where to live, who to marry, and what church to join. With a blend of honest storytelling and incisive critique, James guides listeners through the questions he encountered: What privileges accrue to people categorized as White? How have some Christians bolstered White supremacy through misreading of Scripture? How does Whiteness make itself invisible? And is it possible to give it up?The things we can't see wield the most power, so it's time to take a hard look at Whiteness. Ultimately, James writes, White people like him have a lot of work to do, and it's past time to get started. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Micah Howery.
