When Arkady Petrovich comes home from college, his father finds his eager, naïve son changed almost beyond recognition, for the impressionable Arkady has fallen under the powerful influence of the friend he has brought with him. A self-proclaimed nihilist, the ardent young Bazarov shocks Arkady's father by criticizing the landowning way of life and by his outspoken determination to sweep away traditional values of contemporary Russian society. Turgenev's depiction of the conflict between generations and their ideals stunned readers when Fathers and Sons was first published in 1862. But many could also sympathize with Arkady's fascination with its nihilist hero, whose story vividly captures the hopes and regrets of a changing Russia. Fathers and Sons is a brilliant work that captures the tension that existed among generations and class in the prerevolutionary era in Russia. This version of Fathers and Sons is the translation by Constance Garnett. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sean Runnette. Fathers and Sons (1862), which can also be translated as Fathers and Children, by Ivan Turgenev, is one of the most acclaimed Russian novels of the 19th century. The fathers and children of the novel refer to the growing divide between the two generations of Russians, and the character Yevgeny Bazarov, a nihilist who rejects the old order. Turgenev wrote Fathers and Sons as a response to the growing cultural schism between liberals of the 1830s-1840s and the growing nihilist movement. Both the nihilists (the "sons") and the 1830s liberals (the "fathers") sought Western-based social change in Russia. These two modes of thought were contrasted with the Slavophiles, who believed that Russia's path lay in its traditional spirituality. Fathers and Sons, which might be considered as the first really modern novel in Russian literature, enraged everyone when it was published. Turgenev, however, won the praise of Flaubert, Maupassant, and Henry James. Today, Fathers and Sons is regarded as one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. ungekürzt. Language: English. Wozu festhalten an Idealen und Werten? Ist doch alles falsche Romantik, also weg damit!

A classic held as one of the greatest works of 19th Century fiction. The novel is thought of as a reply to the growing cultural divide and alienation between liberals of the 1830s/1840s and the rapidly growing nihilist movement. These two philosophies were contrasted with the conservative Slavophiles, who believed that Russia's greatness lay in its traditional spirituality... The main characters reflect a youthful rebellious and anarchistic thought, therefore confronted with their traditional fathers. The character of Bazarov, nasty and anarchistic, remains one of the great creations of the literary world. Language: English. Narrator: James Holt.
