The Social Leap
"A rollicking tour through humanity's evolutionary past, and von Hippel is the consummate tour guide. With equal parts wisdom, humor, authority, and charm, he shows how our past explains the present and why our well-being rests on an understanding of how our minds evolved.”—Adam Alter, New York Times bestselling author of Drunk Tank Pink and Irresistible Human psychology is rife with contradictions: We work hard to achieve our goals, but happiness at our success is fleeting. We hope our friends will do well but can't help but feel jealous if they do too well. We're aghast at the thought of people we know being murdered, but are unconcerned when our armed forces kill enemies we've never met. We complain about difficult bosses but are often just as bad when we're in charge. These inconsistencies may seem irrational, but each evolved to serve a vital function in our lives. Indeed, the most fundamental aspects of our psychology were permanently shaped by the "social leap” our ancestors made from the rainforest to the savannah. In their struggle to survive on the open grasslands, our ancestors prioritized teamwork and sociality over physical prowess, creating an entirely new kind of intelligence that forever altered our place on this planet. A blend of anthropology, biology, history, and psychology with evolutionary science, The Social Leap traces our evolutionary history to show how events in our distant past continue to shape our lives today. From why we exaggerate to why we believe our own lies, the implications are far-reaching and extraordinary.- Shop: buecher

Strap on a pair of headphones, pods, or find yourself a quiet corner somewhere and be taken along on a bicycle trip across the United States. World renowned author and funny man Tim Fahey narrates his epic book, The Fun Mover Chronicles. Join him as he rolls his way along bicycle touring’s fondest route - the Northern Tier. Your humble author re-prioritized his bucket list by putting a decades-long dream at the top: riding a bicycle from one side of America to the other.Armed with a burning desire to ride a really long way on a bicycle, Tim mounted up and pedaled onward across the United States as a newly minted orphan and a middle-aged man on a mission. Along the way, he met new people, saw new places, and discovered a hidden strength. He also discovered a nearly endless parade of characters that, together, underscored how terrific it is to be above ground and riding a bike. There is fun and adventure to be had when you’re cruising across the country, and the daily dose of random was just what the doctor ordered - "Take two wheels and call me in the morning". Since the whole thing - the bike trip, life - is all just a tad absurd in the first place, why not name your bike "The Fun Mover" and author a book about the stars of the show: the people met along the way?Adventure and and a sense of subtle hilarity ensues.Bike travel can be grueling, physically and mentally, but that’s where the true test of what you’re made of begins. Getting to where you’re going, sometimes, ain’t no picnic, but a smile makes the miles go easier. Many celebrities have read or listened to this book. Join them. Laugh out loud. Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 587min
An incredible but true account of achieving one of the most awe-inspiring midlife physical transformations ever In October 2006, the night before he was to turn forty, Rich experienced a chilling glimpse of his future. Nearly fifty pounds overweight and unable to climb the stairs without stopping, he saw where his sedentary lifestyle was taking him. Most of us look the other way when granted such a moment of clarity, but not Rich. Plunging into a new way of eating that made processed foods off limits and prioritized plant nutrition and daily training, Rich morphed—in mere months—from out-of-shape midlifer to endurance machine. Ninety days into his physical overhaul, Rich left the house for a light jog and found himself running a near marathon. It was time to scale up his goals. How many of us take up a sport at age forty and compete for the title of the world’s best within two years? Finding Ultra recounts Rich’s remarkable journey to the starting line of the elite Ultraman World Championship competition, which pits the world’s fittest humans against each other in a 320-mile ordeal of swimming, biking, and running. Following that test, Rich conquered an even greater one: the Epic5 Challenge—five Ironman-distance triathlons, each on a different Hawaiian island, all completed in less than a week. This is more than an inside look at a series of jaw-dropping athletic feats or a practical training manual for those who would attempt a similar transformation. Yes, Rich’s account rivets and instructs, providing information that will be invaluable to anyone who wants to change their physique; but this book is most notable as a powerful testament to human resiliency, for as we learn early on, Rich’s life has posed numerous physical and social challenges, including a fierce battle with alcoholism. Ultimately Finding Ultra is a beautifully written portrait of what willpower can accomplish. It challenges us to rethink what we’re capable of a ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Rich Roll. We Are What We Eat: A Slow Food Manifesto
From chef and food activist Alice Waters, an impassioned plea for a radical reconsideration of the way each and every one of us cooks and eatsIn We Are What We Eat, Alice Waters urges us to take up the mantle of slow food culture, the philosophy at the core of her life s work. When Waters first opened Chez Panisse in 1971, she did so with the intention of feeding people good food during a time of political turmoil. Customers responded to the locally sourced organic ingredients, to the dishes made by hand, and to the welcoming hospitality that infused the small space human qualities that were disappearing from a country increasingly seduced by takeout, frozen dinners, and prepackaged ingredients. Waters came to see that the phenomenon of fast food culture, which prioritized cheapness, availability, and speed, was not only ruining our health, but also dehumanizing the ways we live and relate to one another.Over years of working with regional farmers, Waters and her partners learned how geography and seasonal fluctuations affect the ingredients on the menu, as well as about the dangers of pesticides, the plight of fieldworkers, and the social, economic, and environmental threats posed by industrial farming and food distribution. So many of the serious problems we face in the world today from illness, to social unrest, to economic disparity, and environmental degradation are all, at their core, connected to food. Fortunately, there is an antidote. Waters argues that by eating in a slow food way, each of us like the community around her restaurant can be empowered to prioritize and nurture a different kind of culture, one that champions values such as biodiversity, seasonality, stewardship, and pleasure in work. This is a declaration of action against fast food values, and a working theory about what we can do to change the course. As Waters makes clear, every decision we make about what we put in our mouths affects not only our bodies but also the world at large our families, our communities, and our environment. We have the power to choose what we eat, and we have the potential for individual and global transformation simply by shifting our relationship to food. All it takes is a taste.- Shop: buecher

ADAPTIVE PROJECT FRAMEWORK
A Breakthrough Framework for Adaptive Project Management from Project Management Guru Robert K. Wysocki Traditional project management models simply are not appropriate for an increasing number of critical projects, for which complete requirements and objectives cannot be specified upfront, and relentless change cannot be avoided. What's needed is an entirely new framework for project management: one that combines Agile methods with the profession's most enduring best practices. In this book, Robert K. Wysocki provides that framework-the Adaptive Project Framework (APF)-and shows how to apply it in any domain. Wysocki, one of the world's leading project management consultants, has spent decades helping large organizations succeed with complex projects. Drawing on everything he's learned, he explains why a fundamentally new framework is needed, and introduces all five phases of that framework. He covers artifacts, processes, and deliverables, and shows how to utilize each phase most effectively in your environment. Through four detailed case studies, you'll discover how APF can help you adapt to unexpected events, encouraging creative responses based on open partnerships between clients and project teams. Coverage includes Bringing greater flexibility and speed to any project, regardless of its goals or context Moving forward successfully with projects that have vague requirements Discovering what clients really want, not just what they say they want Managing ongoing scope changes throughout a project Customizing APF to your own environment Integrating APF with existing agile software development methods Overcoming the obstacles to success with APF Preparing for the future of project management This book is written for every project participant-project and program managers, software and product developers, process designers, and business analysts-who needs to deliver results in a world that won't stand still. Circular Songs
Diana Nuñez Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, I moved at the age of nineteen to Mexico City where I started singing professionally with the Carlos Beltran Orchestra. There I met a group of Swedish musicians, the Gimmicks, who asked me to join their group. I said yes, travelled to Sweden with them and have been a Swedish resident since then. For five years I sang and travelled around the world with this group. It was a great group with quality musicians who became like my family away from home. Especially the co-singer, Anita Strandell, whom I still work together with at times! (Our latest collaboration is the CD album 'Tropical Touch', recorded in 2004 for Gazell Records). The Gimmicks recorded several albums from. In 1998 the CD collection album 'The best of the Gimmicks from Acapulco to Tokyo' was released by Sonet Records. After The Gimmicks, Anita Strandell and I continued on and formed a trio call Tre Damer with Inger Öst. This group became a huge success and for five intense years we received critical acclaim for performances and shows in night clubs, concert halls, festivals and TV, often collaborating with some of Swedens best lyricists, artists and musicians. Our most fruitful collaboration and the one people still remember us for, was with Swedens most well loved artist/poet/troubador, the late Cornelis Vreeswijk. This period in my career is what made it possible for me to really penetrate the Swedish music culture and language. It was a time of musical and artistical schooling. Another learning period for me was when I started doing work as a back-up vocalist. Here I have to thank my parents for giving me music lessons, since reading music is a must for this kind of work. During these years I did back-up work for both studio recordings, television/radio shows as well as concerts. I think the highlight of this period is when I was part of the back-up vocalists in the orchestra for a TV show where Tina Turner was a guest! Unforgettable! A close second is the 8-year gig I did with one of Swedens most popular female artists, Lill Lindfors. Every autumn, spring and summer ´86 through ´94 I was part of her orchestra. A wonderful time of memorable concerts and lots of traveling all around Scandinavia and even the USA. This period is pivotal in my life. I married Lars Beijbom, who is also my greatest music companion through my life thus far. We formed the group Bright Orange with some of the best musicians around Stockholm at the time and it turned out to be the most powerful musical experience I´ve ever had. A fusion of pop, rock and jazz with all songs composed by Lars, we recorded an album called, 'The Goose is Out' for Innovative Communications in 1983 and toured Germany. Bright Orange lasted until half the band started building families. Our own son, Daniel, was born in November of ´84. In January of ´86 I left Stockholm after fifteen intense years. With my husband and baby we moved to the little 'metropolis' in the south of Sweden called Lund. Despite leaving the music capitol that Stockholm is, as two well established names in music, we have never regretted the move. We've been lucky to initiate lots of new and great music collaborations here in the part of Sweden called Skåne. After a few years where I prioritized motherhood, Anita Strandell and I revived the trio Tre Damer, but this time with singer Mia Adolphson. We did mostly parties and conference entertainment as well as an occasional TV show or small tour. But in 1995, we did a project that will stand out in my memory as a favorite. The idea of singing with a brass band emerged and our arranger, Lars Beijbom, started writing for three voices and a brass quintet! Together with Mia´s dream to sing Duke Ellingtons music, we decided to do a tribute to Duke and his music. With the 'Cornova Brass', Lars on drums and Tre Damer, we toured with this concert program for three years. The project culminated with a recording of the CD album entitled 'Duke, we love you madly' released in 1999, honoring Duke Ellingtons 100th birthday. We topped it all off with a concert at the Swedish Cultural Center in Paris! My voice had up to now been the tool that enabled me to work with music. But in 1998 dance and drums came into my life and it was the thing that integrated all the facets of music for me...voice, movement and rhythm. It started with a weekend workshop in Creative Dance. I had so far in my life stood behind a microphone and felt the movement and rhythm in the music, but expressed it with my voice. Creative Dance was liberating and I knew that it would always be a part of my life. I completed a leadership course in Creative Dance at the Frigörande Dans Akademin in Dalarna, Sweden. Shortly after that I was introduced to West African rhythms. I started playing the djembe and Malinke bass drums first and after a year or so I started dancing. Since then I have studied for both the accomplished Swedish drum teacher Fabian Hildebrand and the Djembe Master, Famoudou Konate from Guinea. I travelled to Senegal in 2001 and Mali in 2007 to play and dance. Together with two other women, Helen Melin and Lena Jungmark, we lead courses and workshops in West African Rhythms. The Beijbom Kroner Big Band is band that my husband, Lars Beijbom, started back in 1994 together with his danish colleague, trombone player Erling Kronor. They were asked to be part of a project called 'Music Around', sponsored by cultural organizations from both sides of the Sound between the south of Sweden and Denmark. They asked me to be the vocal soloist for their program, 'Latin Express', knowing my fondness for Brazilian music. Together with another soloist, the world renowned bandoneon player, Marcelo Nisinman from Argentina, we performed concerts and festivals during this period. Besides Brazilian songs I also sang original music of both Lars and Erling, as well as Argentinian Tangos, something totally new to me....something I hope to explore more of in the future. A live CD was recorded and released in 2004, 'Tango for Bad People'. My long time colleague, Anita Strandell, was approached by Gazell Records in Stockholm and was asked to revive the sound of The Gimmicks from back in the 70´s. She and I asked Lars Beijbom to arrange and produce the recording which documented for us more than thirty years of singing together. For this CD we chose both Brazilian, American and Swedish music, including a couple of original songs by Lars. We called this collaboration 'Tropical Touch'. The group Andetag started out as a combination of singing and meditating. We are four women, Inger Ohlén Reingold, Helen Melin, Lena Jungmark and myself, who get together and let our voices express whatever is in the moment. We have developed into a unit where our voices function as finely tuned instruments with improvisation as the cornerstone, although we also sing songs and psalms. Our concept can be described as voices, meditation and concert. We have since September of 2007 'performed' in various churches in the south of Sweden . It is a unique opportunity for the listener to either participate or just be in the moment with us....magical! We have recently released our first CD, 'Valv'. (Trans. 'Archway') After many years of working together with countless musicians, singers and producers, my husband, Lars Beijbom and I started writing, arranging and recording our first joint venture, the CD Circular Songs. With Lars programming and recording all instruments and myself singing all voices, we manifested our vision to compose and record songs which move round and round as they expand. Songs where lyrics take second place to sounds, colors, orchestrations, textures etc. All with an on-going theme that can be described as lyrical/rhythmical, yin/yang, sun/moon, day/night, in/out and so on....the pulse of life. Lars Beijbom Lars is from Sweden. Early musical influenses include jazzgreats Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Blakey as well as pop and pop/soul- Shop: odax
