On Time by Catherine Blyth reveals why time sped up, why there never seems to be enough and how to make it yours again. We have more time than ever - so why do we feel time poor? The short answer is that our world is addicted to fast. And we have become its servant. Instead of grasping the liberating potential of technology, many of us are locked in to a doomed race to outpace hurry. The more we value time, the less we feel we have. Angry, witty and enlightening, On Time is a handbook for navigating a fast-forward world that asks the questions productivity guides ignore: why time sped up, how it is stolen, how it really works and how to stop managing it and instead make it work for you. Blyth combines cutting-edge research from neuroscience and psychology with accessible stories from philosophy to history to sinking ships, from Leonardo da Vinci to Usain Bolt, Aristotle to Anna Wintour, Kant to Keith Richards. Delving into the secret lives of habits, decisions and motivation, she reveals why time speeds up when you long for it to slow and how time thieves take our good intentions for a walk. Find out what makes good timing; why some hours trudge while others sprint by; how bright colours, fast food and rapid breathing affect our tempo; how autonomy takes the stress out of pressure; and what hours suit which activities best. Each of us can expect 1,000 months on this planet, if we are lucky. So cease clock watching, stop stockpiling self-reproach and quit chasing white rabbits. Time is humanity's finest invention, and with small, practical steps it can become your servant. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sophie Aldred. For over two centuries, the capital of America has been located in Washington, D.C., and among all the iconic landmarks and monuments associated with the city, nothing is as conspicuous as the Capitol, the magnificent building that houses Congress and sits on Capitol Hill at the epicenter of the city. At the same time, even though the Capitol is now one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, the image everyone is familiar with took decades to achieve, and its grand scope belies its rather chaotic history. In fact, the Capitol was partially burned by the British during the War of 1812, and its now famous dome was still under construction while the nation fought itself during the Civil War. Moreover, it's easy to forget that the expansion of the country resulted in the addition of new Congressmen, requiring the expansion of the Capitol as the seat of the legislative branch. The history of the Capitol also serves as a reminder that the building, like the nation, both shapes and is shaped by history. There are still singed walls from the War of 1812 under the marble façade, and microscopic examination could no doubt find cracks from the vibration of distant cannon fire during the Civil War. Of course, there is no way to calculate the wear and tear caused by the millions of feet that trudge through the Capitol's sacred halls each year, but through it all, the Capitol has managed to endure, just like the nation it represents. The United States Capitol Building: The History and Legacy of the Seat of Congress looks at the winding history of the building and how it has changed over time. ungekürzt. Language: English. Beat the odds with a bold strategy We've all seen hockey stick business plans before. A future where results sail confidently upward, but with a dip coinciding with next year's budget. CEOs usually rely on their experience and business smarts to figure out which of those hockey sticks are real, and which are fake. But all too often getting to a "yes," competing for resources, and striving to claim credit, cloud the hard decisions. Another strategy framework? No thanks, we already have plenty of those, and they don't fix the real problem: the social dynamics in your strategy room. Mining the data from thousands of large companies, McKinsey Partners Chris Bradley, Martin Hirt and Sven Smit open the windows of that room, and bring an "outside view." They found three discrete groups of companies: the bottom quintile with massive economic losses; the long, flat, middle 60 percent with practically no economic profit; and the top 20 percent to whom all the value accrues. Some companies do achieve real hockey stick performance: but just 1-in-12 jump from the middle tier to the top over a ten year period. This does not happen by magic--there is an empirically-backed science to improve your odds of success by capitalizing on your endowment, riding the right trends, and most importantly, making a few big moves. To make these big moves happen, you're going to have to break through inertia, gamesmanship and risk aversion. You're going to have to mitigate human biases and manage group dynamics. Eight practical shifts can help you do this, and unlock bigger, bolder, better strategies. This is not another by-the-book approach to strategy. It's not another trudge through frameworks or small-scale case studies promising a secret formula for success. It's an irreverent, fact-driven, and humorous take on the real world of strategic decision making.

You remember Wild, with the author’s amazing trek and heart-breaking backstory, right? This isn’t that. Although there is some wandering around that leads to recovery and redemption. And hiking did happen along the way. This could be A Million Little Pieces, but it’s not. This story is actually all true. Might even be Mommy Dearest, but thankfully, it’s not even close. For, this story is told with heart and sensitivity. In fact, Walker is really about one woman’s spiritual journey to open her heart and develop compassion. Through it all, her own gumption would be her steady companion. The title of Walker evolved from a line in a poem: “There is no road, walker, you make the road by walking.” This phrase captures the narrative of Jill Loree’s life on many levels. It starts out with a young girl raised in a singing Lutheran family where things looked good on the outside. But inside, Jill Loree was struggling. Later, she would “trudge the dreary road of destiny” as the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book puts it, getting sober at 26 and picking up only one white chip. That’s not nothing, considering that most of Jill Loree’s childhood memories are infused with her father’s drinking. Her mother, on the other hand, had a controlling, codependent streak that wouldn’t end. Sounds dreary indeed, right? In Walker, however, Jill Loree artfully lifts the story out of the ditch and finds the grace weaving between the lines. Merging in poetry - her own, her sons’, and even her dad’s - adds heart, depth, and levity to the telling. Her gentle wit and brisk pace keeps things moving. True to the title, there’s no need to sit and stew in misery. Yes, hard things happened along the way, but there was also delight. Jill Loree was a working mom who bumped up against a few bricks but managed to flow around most of them. In the end, her career in advertising and the corporate world would prove both challenging and r ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jill Loree.
