The extraordinary, touching true story of Smoky, the smallest - and arguably bravest - dog of World War II. In February 1944, as Japanese military advances threatened to overwhelm New Guinea, a tiny, four-pound Yorkshire Terrier was discovered hiding in the island's thick jungles. A total mystery as to her origins, she was adopted by US Army Air Force Corporal William "Bill" Wynne, an air-crewman in a photo reconnaissance squadron, becoming an irreplaceable lucky charm for the unit. When Smoky saved Wynne's life by barking a warning of an incoming kamikaze attack, he nicknamed her the "angel from a foxhole". Smoky's exploits continued when she jumped for the unit in a specially designed parachute and famously joined the aircrews flying daring sorties in the war-torn skies. But her most heroic feat was running a cable through a 70-foot pipe no wider than four inches in places to enable critical communication lines to be run across an airbase that had just been seized from the enemy, saving hundreds of ground-crew from being exposed to enemy bombing. In recognition of her efforts, Smoky was awarded eight battle stars. Smoky the Brave brings to vivid life the danger and excitement of the many missions of World War II's smallest hero.  ungekürzt. Ed and his childhood friend Danny are gearing up in Kodiak, Alaska, preparing to join the Angie Piper's crew for another season of crab fishing. Ed is a relative newcomer, but despite the perils of the trade, he sees no reason to fear for Danny's safety. The Angie Piper has always been blessed. She has a stalwart captain, Fred; a crack engineer, Dave; and two time-tested pros to keep the rest of the operation running smoothly, exuberant Loni and the more reticent Salazar. Every season has a greenhorn, the one who works for a pittance in order to learn the ropes. This time around it's Ed's friend Danny, no ordinary crewman. Their shared history is complex. Though strong, brave, and hardworking, Danny is a simple soul, and Ed is weighed down by guilt, dark memories of the many times he failed to defend his friend against the inevitable bullying. And cantankerous Dave believes Danny is a bad omen, so much so that his bitter opposition may endanger them all. The season starts off strong, and the crew is elated by the bounty of their catch. Then their luck turns. The skies grow dark, the waves swell, and Mother Nature bears down on them with her full arsenal. When the storm finally abates, who will live to tell the tale? ungekürzt. With It or in It tells a captivating and unique story of the 1991 Persian Gulf War as seen from the loader's hatch of an M1A1 tank.Using humor and frank candor, author Bacil Donovan Warren shares his personal experience, as well as that of his fellow tankers, as part of the US Army's 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment (the "Brave Rifles") in Saudi Arabia and Iraq.Warren recounts the initial shock of hearing about Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and his regiment's preparation for deployment during Operation Desert Shield. He describes the stress and sometimes mind-numbing boredom of being deployed deep in the desert of Saudi Arabia, constantly preparing for a possible Iraqi invasion. He recalls the terrifying experience of the start of the air war of Operation Desert Storm and the workman-like action during combat against Iraq's Republican Guard forces during Operation Desert Sabre. With It or in It brings clarity and focus to their unceasing efforts to bring the conflict to a swift and decisive end. Finally, Warren describes the triumphant return of the Brave Rifles to Ft. Bliss, Texas, and the waiting arms of their families and loved ones. Warren's fellow tankers have called With It or in It "honest and moving" (R. Bell) and "almost identical to the experiences I had myself" (W. Compton). The commanding officer of the author's Troop during Desert Shield and Desert Storm remarks that With It or in It "brilliantly captures what is the rarely described gritty and demanding life of an armor crewman" (R. Schultheis).  ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Pete Beretta. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/124131/bk_acx0_124131_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

Jerry Grayson is an ordinary man who chose an extraordinary career. At age 17 he became the youngest helicopter pilot ever to serve in the Royal Navy. By age 25 he was the most decorated peacetime naval pilot in history. For the navy's search-and-rescue pilots, getting to work is both an adventure and an ordeal. Whether rescuing a wounded fighter pilot who has ditched in the sea, saving desperate survivors from a sinking ship, or picking up a grievously ill crewman from the deck of a nuclear-armed submarine that is playing a cat-and-mouse game with the Soviet navy, Jerry Grayson has lived a life of unparalleled excitement and adventure. His finest hour came during the infamous Fastnet Yacht Race of 1979, in which 25 yachts were lost. When a catastrophic storm enveloped the competitors he and his crew pushed their Wessex helicopter to its absolute limits and put their own lives at risk, flying into hurricane-force winds to winch shipwrecked sailors from heaving, tempestuous seas. An investiture at Buckingham Palace with her majesty the queen was the result. Being a rescue pilot is fast paced because there is no choice. Lives are at stake, and pilots must move and think fast. Jerry Grayson's inside view of this heroic service is as inspirational as it is celebratory. Excitingly told, frequently funny, but also very poignant, Jerry's story is not an account of just one man's deeds - it is a salute to all the men and women he worked with who were able to turn tragedies into triumphs. ungekürzt. The world's smallest dog with the world's biggest heart.  Smoky the Brave is the extraordinary, touching and true story of a heroic dog and her adoptive masters in the jungles of the Pacific War. In February 1944, as Japanese military advances threatened to engulf Australasia, a tiny, four-pound Yorkshire terrier was discovered hiding in a Japanese shell scrape amidst the thick jungles of Papua New Guinea. The GIs who discovered her presumed she had been some kind of Japanese army mascot, but it soon turned out that she understood neither commands rendered in Japanese nor English. A mystery, she was adopted by Corporal William 'Bill' Wynne, an air crewman with the US 5th Air Force's 26th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron.  Living in Bill Wynne's tent, sleeping on a piece of green felt salvaged from a card table and sharing his rations, Smoky became the de facto mascot of the regiment. She went on to fly numerous photo-recce and air-sea rescue missions, cocooned in a soldier's pack hanging next to the machine guns used to repel marauding Japanese fighters. She was awarded eight battle stars, surviving dozens of Japanese combat raids on Papua New Guinea, and braving a typhoon that ravaged Okinawa. After saving Wynne's life by warning of a falling shell as their landing craft approached an enemy-held beach - a shell that killed the eight men that Wynne was standing beside - he nicknamed her the 'angel from a foxhole'. In one of her most famous exploits, Smoky parachuted using a special rig designed to fit one of the world's smallest but toughest dogs.  In perhaps her most heroic exploit of all, Smoky ran a cable through a 70 foot pipe no wider in places than four inches, to enable telephone lines to be run across the recently occupied airbase of Luzon. Her efforts saved hundreds of ground crew from being exposed to enemy bombing, preventing injury and loss of life. Amongst her many other awards, she was given the PDSA's Certificate for Animal ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Chancer.
