Cuban Chickie Boom , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 241min
Cuba, the last forbidden zone. A tropical paradise located only 90 miles from America. The land of lost casinos. But nothing stays lost forever. Political changes and the death of Fidel signaled a lift in restrictions - a slow revitalization but progress none the less. It was a brave new world where the gates were slowly opening once again. And two middle level mobsters wanted it. They wanted it all. The boys had a good plan for reopening those lost Cuban casinos - under new management, of course. Their management. Yes, it was a great plan. But without Syndicate's approval, it was a death sentence. Still, those two who would be king rolled the dice. Payoffs had already been made, and life was smooth sailing ahead. Perhaps their plan might have reaped fruit. Too bad Private Eye Chick Harmon of Key West was there on vacation to spoil it all. The mobsters captured Sammy the Bull, but Chick got away. One call to Key West brought a band of vagabonds and misfits from 90 miles south to knock down that house of cards. They had one of our pals prisoner, and even though we were strangers in a strange land - out gunned, out muscled, and the game was rigged - we still chose the treacherous path and bet against the house. Life is full of wise decisions. Wise is overrated. Go make some bad choices. Friendship is well worth the risk. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Brian Atkinson. The Flatiron: The New York Landmark and the Incomparable City That Arose with It , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 621min
The marvelous story of the Flatiron: the instantly recognizable building that signaled the start of a new era in New York history. Critics hated it. The public feared it would topple over. Passersby were knocked down by the winds. But even before it was completed, the Flatiron Building had become an unforgettable part of New York City. The Flatiron Building was built by the Chicago-based Fuller Company - a group founded by George Fuller, "the father of the skyscraper" - to be their New York headquarters. The company's president, Harry Black, was never able to make the public call the Flatiron the Fuller Building, however. Black's was the country's largest real estate firm, constructing Macy's department store, and soon after the Plaza Hotel, the Savoy Hotel, and many other iconic buildings in New York as well as in other cities across the country. With an ostentatious lifestyle that drew constant media scrutiny, Black made a fortune only to meet a tragic, untimely end. In The Flatiron, Alice Sparberg Alexiou chronicles not just the story of the building but the heady times in New York at the dawn of the 20th century. It was a time when Madison Square Park shifted from a promenade for rich women to one for gay prostitutes; when photography became an art; motion pictures came into existence; the booming economy suffered increasing depressions; jazz came to the forefront of popular music - and all within steps of one of the city's best-known and best-loved buildings. ungekürzt. Redeemer: The Life of Jimmy Carter , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 607min
Evangelical Christianity and conservative politics are today seen as inseparable. But when Jimmy Carter, a Democrat and a born-again Christian, won the presidency in 1976, he owed his victory in part to American evangelicals, who responded to his open religiosity and his rejection of the moral bankruptcy of the Nixon Administration. Carter, running as a representative of the New South, articulated a progressive strand of American Christianity that championed liberal ideals, racial equality, and social justice - one that has almost been forgotten since. In Redeemer, acclaimed religious historian Randall Balmer reveals how the rise and fall of Jimmy Carter’s political fortunes mirrored the transformation of American religious politics. From his beginnings as a humble peanut farmer to the galvanizing politician who rode a reenergized religious movement into the White House, Carter’s life and career mark him as the last great figure in America’s long and venerable history of progressive evangelicalism. Although he stumbled early in his career - courting segregationists during his second campaign for Georgia governor - Carter’s run for president marked a return to the progressive principles of his faith and helped reenergize the evangelical movement. Responding to his message of racial justice, women’s rights, and concern for the plight of the poor, evangelicals across the country helped propel Carter to office. Yet four years later, those very same voters abandoned him for Ronald Reagan and the Republican Party. Carter’s defeat signaled the eclipse of progressive evangelicalism and the rise of the Religious Right, which popularized a dramatically different understanding of the faith, one rooted in nationalism, individualism, and free-market capitalism. An illuminating biography of our 39th president, Redeemer presents Jimmy Carter as the last great standard-bearer of an important strand of American Christianity, and provides an orig ungekürzt. A Pint of Plain: Tradition, Change and the Fate of the Irish Pub , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 480min
Seamlessly blending history and reportage, Bill Barich offers a heartfelt homage to the traditional Irish pub, and to the central piece of Irish culture disappearing along with it. After meeting an Irishwoman in London and moving to Dublin, Bill Baricha found himself looking for a traditional Irish pub to be his local. There are nearly 12,000 pubs in Ireland, so he appeared to have plenty of choices. He wanted a pub like the one in John Fords classic movie, "The Quiet Man", offering talk and drink with no distractions, but such pubs are now scare as publicans increasingly rely on flat-screen televisions, rock music, even Texas Hold 'Em to attract a dwindling clientele. For Barich, this signaled that something deeper was at playan erosion of the essence of Ireland, perhaps without the Irish even being aware.A Pint of Plain is Barichs witty, deeply observant portrait of an Ireland vanishing before our eyes. Drawing on the wit and wisdom of Flann O'Brien, James Joyce, Brendan Behan, and J. M. Synge, Barich explores how Irish culture has become a commodity for exports for such firms as the Irish Pub Company, which has built some 500 authentic Irish pubs in 45 countries, where authenticity is in the eye of the beholder. The tale of Arthur Guinness and the famous brewery he founded in the mid-18th century reveals the astonishing fact that more stout is sold in Nigeria than in Ireland itself. From the famed watering holes of Dublin to tiny village pubs, Barich introduces a colorful array of characters, and, ever pursuing craic, the ineffable Irish word for a good time, engages in an unvarnished yet affectionate discussion about what it means to be Irish today. ungekürzt. The American Revolutionary War: A Short History: 30 Minute Book Series 5 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 48min
The American Revolutionary War was an event that changed the path of nations. The birth of the United States of America signaled a deadly struggle that cost the lives of thousands of American and British soldiers. The conflict between the mother country, Britain, and the colonists didn't start overnight; it was series of events over a decade that finally led to the first shots being fired at the battle of Lexington and Concord. This bitter war would drag on for years, with battlegrounds scattered up and down the eastern seaboard of the now United States - few were spared the effects of the war. Men such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin would prove to be key individuals who helped turn what seemed like a certain defeat for the colonists into a victory over the most powerful military force in the world. The long running conflict between the British and the French worked to the American's favor, as the French were key allies in the war and helped to turn the tide in the favor of the beleaguered Continental Army. It would take more than eight long years from the first shot being fired to the final peace treaty being signed before this bloody chapter of America would close. Apartheid in South Africa: The History and Legacy of the Notorious Segregationist Policies in the 20th Century , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 133min
Although apartheid is typically dated from the late 1940s until its dismantling decades later, segregationist policies had been the norm in South Africa from nearly the moment European explorers sailed to the region and began settling there. Whether it was displacing and fighting indigenous groups like the Khoi and San, or fighting other whites like the Boer, separation between ethnicities was the norm in South Africa for centuries before the election of Malan signaled the true rise of the Afrikaner far right. The man most associated with dismantling apartheid, of course, is Nelson Mandela. With the official policy of apartheid instituted in 1948 by an all-white government, Mandela was tried for treason between the years of 1956-61 before being acquitted. He participated in the Defiance Campaign of 1952, and oversaw the 1955 Congress of the People, but when the African National Congress was banned in 1960, he proposed a military wing, despite his initial reluctance toward violent resistance, a reluctance which had its roots in original nonviolent protests through the South African Communist Party. The ANC did not openly discourage such an idea, and the Umkhonto we Sizwe was established. Mandela was again arrested in 1962 and tried for attempts to overthrow the government by violence. The sentence was five years of hard labor, but this was increased to a life sentence in 1964, a sentence handed down to seven of his closest colleagues as well.Mandela would eventually serve 27 years, but his statements made in court received enormous international coverage and acclaim, and his reputation grew during his time in Robben Island Prison of Capetown, the Pollsmoor and Victor Verster Prisons. He was ultimately released in February 1990, in large part as a result of the international campaign generated by his words and the current South African story. Shortly after that, he was elected as the first man of African descent to the presidency of South Africa, which ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman. The Pope Who Would Be King: The Exile of Pius IX and the Emergence of Modern Europe , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 825min
The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Pope and Mussolini tells the story of the bloody revolution that stripped the pope of political power and signaled the birth of modern Europe. “[David I.] Kertzer’s brilliant treatment of the crisis in the papacy between 1846 and 1850 reads like a thriller. All the characters, from the poor of Rome to the king of Naples, stand out with a vividness that testifies to his mastery of prose.” (Jonathan Steinberg, The New York Review of Books)Named one of the best books of the year by the The Christian Science Monitor and The Seattle TimesOnly two years after Pope Pius IX’s election in 1846 had triggered great popular enthusiasm across Italy, the pope found himself a virtual prisoner in his own palace. The revolutions that swept through Europe and shook Rome threatened to end the popes’ thousand-year reign over the Papal States, if not the papacy itself. The resulting drama - with a colorful cast of characters, from Louis Napoleon and his rabble-rousing cousin Charles Bonaparte to Garibaldi, Tocqueville, and Metternich - was rife with treachery, tragedy, and international power politics. David Kertzer, one of the world’s foremost experts on the history of Italy and the Vatican, brings this pivotal moment vividly to life. Praise for The Pope Who Would Be King “Engaging, intelligent, and revealing...essential reading for those seeking to understand the perennial human forces that shape both power and faith.” (Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Soul of America)“Subtle and brilliantly told.” (Christopher Clark, London Review of Books)“Richly rewarding...church history at its most fascinating.” (The Christian Science Monitor)“Required, and riveting, reading that shares many of the qualities of Kertzer’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece: an exceptionally deep archival and ungekürzt. The Extraordinary Life of Steve Jobs , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 89min
Despite his roughness on his employees and peers, he touted Apple's results, especially the fantastic innovations. Otherwise, he thought, if any of his employees felt brutalized under his leadership, they could have left at the time as he put it; but they didn’t. Apple beat square competitors with successful innovations like OS X Lion, iMac, iPod Nano, Apple Stores, iTunes Store, iPhone, App Store, iPad, MacBook, and iPod, among others. His loyal and committed employees saw the company grow beyond bounds while ill under the care of his loving family. He treasured innovations like Macintosh and iPad, including Apple as a company. Steve Jobs went through challenges that called for hard work and endurance to make great products. However, his avenues toward success were anchored on a number of pillars; by the time Steve Jobs was back at Apple in 1997, the company was launching peripherals and computers plus versions of Macintosh. He shocked many by advocating a stop with the version releases. In a meeting with his coworkers, Steve took a magic marker and drew on a whiteboard a two-by-two grid to which he connected the words, “consumer” and “pro” versus “desktop” and “portable”. This, he signaled to his team, was to focus on four great products in each quadrant by canceling innovations that were in the offing. To the shocking suggestions, the company could later be saved by focusing on what is essential and relevant, just like real companies with real products do. While on retreats with his team, he would lecture them on whiteboards, his master platform, asking about what 10 things would Apple do next. While suggestions streamed in, Jobs would write them down, discarding the irrelevant ones until the best 10 would be picked, and then the last ultimate three as he would insist. As much as the company Zen training helped shape his personality, Jobs struggled to avoid distractions to the backing of his family and colleagues. ungekürzt. Language: English.
