Kate Remembered , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 598min
For seven decades Katharine Hepburn played a leading role in the popular culture of the 20th century, reigning as an admired actress, a beloved movie star, and a treasured icon of the modern American woman. She also remained one of the most private of all the public figures of her time. In 1983, at the age of 75, her career cresting, the four-time Academy Award-winner opened the door to biographer A. Scott Berg, then 33, and began a special friendship, one that endured to the end of her illustrious life. Here are the stories from those countless intimate conversations, and much more. In addition to recording heretofore untold biographical details of her entire phenomenal career and her famous relationships with such men as Spencer Tracy and Howard Hughes, Kate Remembered also tells the amusing, often emotional story of one of the most touching friendships in her final years. Scott Berg provides his own memories of Katharine Hepburn offstage: quiet dinners in her town house in New York City; winter swims (she swam, he watched) in the Long Island Sound at Fenwick, her home in Connecticut; weekend visits with family members and dear friends...even some unusual appearances by the likes of Michael Jackson and Warren Beatty. Finally, Kate Remembered discusses the legendary actress's moving farewell, during which her mighty personality surrendered at last to her failing body, all the while remaining true to her courageous character. Kate Remembered is a book about love and friendship, family and career, Hollywood and Broadway, all punctuated by unforgettable lessons from an extraordinary life. ungekürzt. Language: English. I Got the Show Right Here: The Amazing, True Story of How an Obscure Brooklyn Horn Player Became the Last Great Broadway Showman , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 400min
Guys & Dolls...The Boyfriend...How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying...Can-Can... These are just a few of the many Broadway shows produced by the legendary Cy Feuer, who, in partnership with the late Ernest H. Martin, brought to life many of America's most enduring musicals. Cy Feuer was at the center of these creations, as well as the films based on two of Broadway's most exceptional musicals, Cabaret and A Chorus Line. He was the man in charge, the one responsible for putting everything together, and - almost more important - for holding it together. Now, at age 92, as Cy Feuer looks back on the remarkable career he had on Broadway and in Hollywood, the stories he has to tell of the people he worked with are fabulously rich and entertaining. There's Bob Fosse, a perfectionist with whom Feuer did battle over the filming of the movie Cabaret. There's Frank Loesser, the brilliant and explosive composer of Guys & Dolls, Where's Charley?, and How to Succeed... There's Liza Minnelli, star of both the movie Cabaret and the Broadway musical The Act, whose offstage activities threatened to disrupt the show. There's the contentious George S. Kaufman, the librettist and director whose ego was almost as great as his talent. Add to the list such glamorous figures as Cole Porter, Julie Andrews, Abe Burrows, Gwen Verdon, John Steinbeck, Martin Scorsese, and George Balanchine, and you have a sense of the unbeatable cast of characters who populate this fabulous story of a young trumpet player from Brooklyn who became musical director for the Republic Pictures film studio, then feverishly tackled Broadway, back when "putting on a show" did not require the support of major corporations, and when dreams of overnight success really did have a chance of coming true. Funny, witty, and immensely entertaining, I Got the Show Right Here is a treat for anyone who loves show bus ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Robert Blumenfeld. The Fire in the Rock , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 852min
The Fire in the Rock is a first-person retelling of the Exodus story from the viewpoint of Tzipporah, the wife of Moses; but it is not a conventional Bible story. First, God is offstage; he is present only in the characters' hearts and thoughts. Second, there are no overt miracles - all the events of the Plagues and the Exodus are attributed to natural, if unique, events that are now known to have taken place at around that time. I've seen some confusion on the part of some potential listeners on this issue, so let me make this point clear: in the book, the issue of whether these events were miracles (as Tzipporah herself insists,) or just coincidences, rather depends upon what one brings to them, just as in our own lives. There is no way to know with certainty, and it remains a matter of faith. There is one unambiguously inexplicable occurrence near the end of the book, just to drive home that point. I am not out to sabotage anyone's faith; on the contrary, my intent is to show that there are transcendent things worth believing in, even if one rejects simplistic supernaturalism. In any case, this is not a book of signs and wonders; I write of Moses and Tzipporah as real people with a real, human relationship. Indeed, the book has been described (by Kirkus) as "a powerful, focused love story that may perhaps be more appealing to seekers than believers"; As for the religious aspect - Moses himself is filled with uncertainty and doubt till the end of his life. The central inspiration of the book was, in fact, this simple question, "What if Moses were just an ordinary man?" The Fire in the Rock received a Starred Review from Kirkus Reviews, and was named to its list of 'The Best Books of 2106.' ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charles Henderson Norman. An Outlaw and a Lady: A Memoir of Music, Life with Waylon, and the Faith That Brought Me Home , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 360min
Renowned songwriter, singer, and wife of Waylon Jennings writes an intimate, enormously entertaining memoir of American music, of life with Waylon and the Outlaws, and of faith lost and found. The daughter of a Pentecostal evangelist and a race-car driver, Jessi Colter played piano and sang in church before leaving Arizona to tour with rock 'n' roll pioneer Duane Eddy, whom she married. Colter became a successful recording artist, appearing on American Bandstand and befriending stars such as the the Everly Brothers and Chet Atkins while her songs were recorded by Nancy Sinatra, Dottie West, and others. Her marriage to Eddy didn't last, however, and in 1969 she married the electrifying Waylon Jennings. Together they made their home in Nashville, which, in the 1970s, was ground zero for roots music, drawing Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Shel Silverstein, and others to the Nashville Sound. And Jessi was at the center of it all, the only woman on the landmark Wanted: The Outlaws album, the record that launched the Outlaw Country genre and was the first country album to go platinum. She also tasted personal commercial success with the number-one single "I'm Not Lisa". But offstage life was a challenge, as Waylon pursued his addictions and battled his demons. Having drifted from the church as a young woman, Jessi returned to her faith and found in it a source of strength in the turmoil of living with Waylon. In the 1980s Waylon helped launch the supergroup The Highwaymen, with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson, and the hits kept rolling, as did Waylon's reckless living. Amid it all Jessi faithfully prayed for her husband until finally, at Thanksgiving 2001, Waylon found Jesus, just months before he died. An Outlaw and a Lady is a powerful story of American music, of love in the midst of heartache, and of faith that sustains. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Devon O'Day. Sweet Dreams Are Made of This: A Life in Music , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 626min
A no-holds-barred look into the remarkable life and career of the prolific musician, songwriter, and producer behind Eurythmics and dozens of pop hits. Dave Stewart's life has been a wild ride - one filled with music, constant reinvention, and the never-ending drive to create. Growing up in industrial Northern England, he left home for the gritty London streets of the '70s, where he began collaborating and performing with various musicians, including a young waitress named Annie Lennox. The chemistry between Stewart and Lennox was undeniable, and an intense romance developed. While their passion proved too much offstage, they thrived musically and developed their own sound. They called themselves Eurythmics and launched into global stardom with the massively popular album Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This). For the first time, Stewart shares the incredible, high-octane stories of his life in music - the drug-fueled adventures, the A-list collaborations and relationships, and the creative process that brought us blockbusters from Eurythmics like "Here Comes the Rain Again" and "Would I Lie to You" as well as Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More", No Doubt's "Underneath It All", Golden Globe winner "Old Habits Die Hard" with Mick Jagger, and many more. From great friendships and creative partnerships, including the group SuperHeavy along with Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley, and A. R. Rahman, to inspired performances and intimate moments in the studio, Stewart highlights the musicians he admires and calls friends, from Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, Elton John, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr to Bono, Bon Jovi, and Katy Perry. With a behind-the-scenes look at Stewart's innovative endeavors that keep him on the cutting edge of the music business, Sweet Dreams Are Made of This is a one-of-a-kind portrait of the creative heart of one of its most gifted and enterprising contributors. ungekürzt. Uncomfortable, Hörbuch, Digital, 40min, (USK 18)
There's no one quite like Matt McClowry. An awkward, gentle soul trapped in a hulking physique, Matt has been surprising audiences for nearly a decade, putting a sharp edge to universal topics like family, relationships, and modern life. Born and raised outside of Detroit, Michigan, Matt McClowry began his pursuit of a stand-up career in 2004 by signing up for a local open-mic night, and his comedy has taken off from there. Over the past 10 years, he has built up both his confidence and his writing skills, and he now enjoys a reputation as one of the strongest acts in the Midwest. Part of what gives Matt's comedy a truly unique edge is the fact that he is a high-functioning individual with Asperger's syndrome. Matt does not fit the stereotypical picture of someone with Asperger's, and fans often question him on that point. He finds himself to be much more comfortable onstage than offstage. One common symptom of Asperger's syndrome is not recognizing humor, and despite being a professional comedian, McClowry is not immune to struggling with that. He has found ways to push past this obstacle and uses Asperger's to influence his career in a positive way. There have been many highlights in Matt's career so far. He has performed at the Boston Comedy Festival, Gilda's LaughFest, The Laughing Skull Comedy Festival, and The Bridgetown Comedy Festival. He was a winner at The World Series of Comedy; he has performed at the Oddball Comedy Festival, opened for Whitney Cummings and Marc Maron, and appeared with Bill Burr at Flappers Comedy Club in Los Angeles. He has been seen on Comcast Television and been heard on Sirius XM Radio. Matt continues to travel and perform and broaden his exposure. Dry and dark like a good merlot, Matt's comedy is refreshingly honest and brutally funny. Language: English. Narrator: Matt McClowry. Rod: The Autobiography , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 682min
The long-awaited autobiography of one of rock's true megastars. Rod Stewart (aka Rod The Mod and to a very select few, Dad) was born the working-class son of a Scottish plumber in North London. He was never, as some stories later had it, a professional footballer or a gravedigger, though he did become a bit of a singer - and a fairly good one at that. Rod started out in the early 1960s, playing alongside acts like The Rolling Stones, before his distinctively raspy voice and natural onstage presence caught the eye of the iconic guitarist, Jeff Beck.An often-interesting two year stint with Beck’s group paved the way into the angst-inducing (for the world's hoteliers) five years with the Faces, whose offstage antics with alcohol, hotel rooms, and groupies have become the stuff of legend. And during all this, he found a spare moment to write "Maggie May", among a few others, and launch a solo career that has seen him sell in excess of 200 million records, be inducted into the Hall of Fame twice, and play the world’s largest ever concert. Not bad, as he says, for a bloke with a frog in his throat. And then, there is his not so private life: marriages, divorces and affairs with some of the world’s most beautiful women - Bond girls, movie stars and supermodels - a struggle with steroid dependency, and a brush with cancer which very nearly saw it all slip away. Rod’s is an incredible life, and here, thrillingly and for the first time, he tells the whole thing, leaving no knickers under the bed. Joyously entertaining and at times deeply moving, this is the remarkable story of a guy with one hell of a voice - and one hell of a head of hair. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Simon Vance.
