Melville bringt es mit seinen Romanen Typee (1846) und Omoo (1847) zu einiger Bekanntheit, enttäuscht seine Leser aber mit den nachfolgenden Werken, weil er reine exotische Abenteuer-geschichten verweigert. Die Veröffentlichung von Moby Dick (1851) wird kaum beachtet, und als 1852 Pierre herauskommt, wird er in Kritiken ernsthaft für verrückt erklärt. Sein nächstes (heute als verschollen geltendes) Manuskript Isle of the Cross wird abgelehnt, sein letzter, 1857 veröffentlichter Roman The Corifidence-Man höchstens mit Unverständnis aufgenommen, weitestgehend aber einfach ignoriert. Steht die Bedeutung von Melvilles Romanen völlig außer Zweifel, so bleibt sein lyrisches Werk bis heute selbst in den USA, die ihn als einen ihrer größten Schriftsteller feiern, beinahe unbekannt, obwohl ihn die Fachwelt neben Walt Whitman und Emily Dickinson zu den bedeutendsten Lyrikern Amerikas des 19. Jahrhunderts zählt. Als er sich 1866 mit Battle-Pieces nach zehn Jahren literarischen Schweigens wieder an das Licht der Öffentlichkeit wagt, wird das kaum mehr wahrgenommen.
