Pianist Julia Mustonen's playing has been praised worldwide for it's fire and passion, and consequently she is making a name for herself throughout the Scandinavian countries and abroad. Born to a Finnish-Russian family, she began playing piano at the age of three. Hailed a prodigy during her childhood in Communist Siberia, she began giving concert tours at a very early age, sometimes under the harshest of conditions, she sometimes performed concerts in halls with temperatures of -10C, while outdoor temperatures reached -40C. While conditions at home were moderately better, a pot of hot water was nonetheless kept under the piano to keep her hands from freezing. These hardships have undoubtedly contributed to the depth of emotion, passion and temperament of her performances. Julia Mustonen has worked with such great artists as Staffan Scheja, Alicia de Larrocha, John O'Conor and Olli Mustonen. She has garnered many prestigious awards from The Cultural Foundation, Kordelini Foundation, Jenny ja Antti Wihuri Foundation, The Music Performance Promotion Centre in Finland, The Royal Academy of Music and The Ander Wall Foundation of Sweden. Julia Mustonen has also claimed top prizes in piano competitions domestically and internationally, most notably First Prize in the Nordic Blüthner Piano Competition, resulting in her obtaining of one of her most prized possessions, a Blüthner grand piano. In 2007 she had a critically acclaimed debut performance at the Gotland Chamber Music Festival where she got the following review: " ...the young pianist Julia Mustonen played "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Modest Mussorgsky. She delivered an interpretation that left us completely breathless. ...It has to be like that so that a soloist of great stand can go into the music, become one with the instrument...Julia was living inside the music with strong and sensible theatrical gestures, she was so physical and both caressing and taming the grand piano, as if it were a giant body. Brilliant playing and a long well-deserved applause, with her being called back to stage a number of times!" Soon, Julia, will have her debut concert with the Stockholm Royal Philarmonique Orchestra and she has just finished her tours playing the complete works of Claude Debussy.

Why "On the fly"... We went to Gigi to record some songs for a "demo", without having prepared any list or any arrangement, to feel really free to decide at the moment what to do... That morning there was a cold fog outside, but in the studio the atmosphere was warm and sunny, with gaiety and lightness that make you feel good and even better. Gigi is a wonderful host, we were on vacation: no hurry, no programs. So we went on freely, we get carried away by our feeling that has marked the rhythm of songs we have never trained before ... and, with some 'coffee break' and that special kind of chocolate we ate when we were kids, we found that it was already dark outside. Just a few takes, no corrections, the background noise of those who voluntarily beat the rhythm as one sings or plays, slide notes and smiles on faces through the glass: this record was born in this way, 'right at first time', totally improvised and recorded as if we were on stage. We had fun and emotion, the music can give even this magic, too ... Note: in current language "on the fly' means "improvised, unplanned, done on time, something created when needed and desired. In short, you do it because you want to do it, without much thought. In fact, even in the coldest computer language "on the fly' is the burning process that occurs directly from the source data to destination, without the support of any temporary files. MARCO DETTO is surely one of the greatest jazz pianists in Italy, his art is recognized all around the world thanks to the numerous collaborations with international musicians such as Peter Erskine, Palle Danielsson, Eddie Gomez, Lenny White, Jeremy Steig, in addition to an endless list of Italian musicians such as Bruno De Filippi, Franco Cerri and his association with the historic Marco Antonio Ricci. Composer and pianist of great talent and sensibility, combining musical imagination, passion, energy, romance, a surprising creative improvisation. In 2000, Eddie Gomez wants with it in three concerts in his group with L. White and J. Steig, replacing Mc.Tyner and Chick Corea, the 'IV International festival of classical music and jazz on the Elba Island, after this happy meeting in 2001, he goes to New York to record 'What a Wonderful World' which will be followed by a tour in Italy. The song 'Lasciarsi andare' from the CD 'Bluestones' (2005) won the Honorable Mention in the Jazz category at the International Songwriting Competition 2006 (ISC). Participated in several radio broadcasts on RAI Radio Tre. BEATRICE ZANOLINI is a natural talent with a different way of making music, with new and refined interpretations: a true 'vocal music', from the great classics of of Brazilian, jazz, pop and soul standards, to new compositions and extraordinary authors. She also writes lyrics (presented during concerts and recordings). Her relationship with music has been cultivated and enriched over the years through dance, even by teaching it, for over 10 years. In 2003 she released her first CD of international covers, 'Aro'a nui'. Since 2004, her voice joined other artists looking for new musical languages. Her album 'You make me feel better' was released in 2007, in Italy and abroad, in over 30,000 copies, in 2008 great success of the show / concert 'Canto, quindi sono" at Strehler Theatre. She has performed, among the others, the Blue Note in Milan, in Villa Arconati, at Strehler, Carcano, Sala Fontana and Manzoni Theatres, at Spazio Zazie, during the International Festival of Besana Brianza, at the Vigorelli Stadium of Milan, at Castle of Inverno. She has some important musical projects: a jazz & soul quintet of excellence (WhiteBlack), a duo piano and voice Duo with Marco Detto, a guitar and voice Duo with Riccardo Bianchi, the Maribè Trio with Riccardo Bianchi and Marco Antonio Ricci (doublebass), she is working on a project with Paolo Pilo, guitarist and composer. She sang, among the others, with Franco Cerri Bruno de Filippi, Marco Antonio Ricci, Marco Detto, Giulio Visibelli, Riccardo Bianchi, Paolo Alderighi, Walter Calloni, Nick the Nightfly, Paolo Costa, Marco Brioschi, Lele Melotti, Fabrizio Bernasconi, Tommy Bradascio, the Soloists of Accademia delle Opere Symphony Orchestra. The upcoming a refined CD of songs with acoustic arrangements made and executed in quartet with Riccardo Bianchi (guitar), Marco Antonio Ricci (doublebass), Giulio Visibelli (sax and flute). '... there is not only strength .. Marco Detto turns out to be a great musician for his melody, he is simple and Latin, deeply influenced by blues and gospel when you least expect it. Artistically he deserves: 10' - Carlo Peroni, journalist for 'La Libertà' 'Beatrice, a wonderful mix of sensitivity and creativity, a caressing voice that knows too well how to interpret the lyrics, which is soul and melody, with a rare' feel 'that reaches you, envelops you and takes you away' - Larry McWilliams, Musician and Professor at Ball Street University, Indiana USA Play music in Duo is a wonderful training, often 'magical', whatever instruments are involved, it is evocative, intimate, delicate and charming. Perhaps because the basic elements of music, all music in general, are three (harmony, melody and rhythm), while the elements of the Duo are just only two. But when each element in a Duo helps the other to perform at his best it means that the harmony is no longer just a musical status but it is also, and especially, an emotional value, it is complicity, understanding, empathy. For this reason, performing as a Duo is certainly much more difficult because you risk to feel there's always something missing... You must rely upon the balance between the elements in the arrangements, the ability to interact and improvise. And when one of the two is the voice, it is very important that this is not too dominant, because in the Duo the 'vocal music' wins if it blends perfectly with the other instrument, expressing harmony, melody and rhythm, in perfect balance. The music presented on this CD represents a selection of my songs and chamber pieces, most of which were written within the past seven years, but with a few going back as far as twenty-four. All are recorded here for the first time. The earliest works recorded here are a group of songs--'Dust of Snow,' 'My Love Is In A Light Attire,' and 'The Night Will Never Stay,'--written in 1981, during my student years. The remaining 7 songs date from 1999 and later. 'Spring and Fall' was originally sketched as a piece for treble chorus in 1999, but I revised it a couple of years later as a solo song. 'O You Whom I Often And Silently Come,' was written on the afternoon of December 31, 2000, making it my last twentieth-century work. In 2003, the song was the first winner of the Ned Rorem Award for Song Composition. 'I Sing Of A Maiden,' and 'The Angel's Song' are the first of what I hope will be a series of original Christmas Songs. All the songs are performed by Sarah Stone, mezzo-soprano, and my wife Martha Krasnican, piano. 'Prelude and Bacchanal' for violin, horn, and piano, was commissioned by hornist Brian Kilp, who premiered it during a tour of Bangkok and Singapore. He, Martha, and I have since performed it several times around the US, and the three of us appear on this recording. The title, I think, is self-explanatory. The three piano pieces were all written for Martha. 'Silent Delight' was written in 1992 shortly after we first met. The title comes from the Blake poem "Night": "The moon like a flower/In heaven's high bower,/With silent delight/Sits and smiles on the night." 'Chorale' and 'Scherzino' were both written in 2004. 'Reading Issa' for viola and harp was commissioned by harpist Vanessa Gong, who premiered it with violist Nai-Ying Liao in 2002. The title was suggested by a chance encounter with a website devoted to the haiku of Kobayashi Issa, which I came across after the piece was already under way. After completing each movement, I searched the site for an Issa poem that seemed appropriate, and placed it in the score in lieu of a title heading. I play viola on this recording, and Vanessa Gong plays harp. 'In Silence Under Many A Star' was commissioned by clarinetist John Spicknall, who premiered it in 1998 with his wife Sharilyn on violin and Martha on piano. The title comes from Whitman, it is taken from a stanza of the "Death Carol" section of his "When Lilacs Last In The Dooryard Bloom'd." Here, as in many of his poems, Whitman depicts Death as something kind, gentle, and comforting. In my composition, a recurring passage, marked "Very slow, delicate, and caressing," is identified in the score as a Danse Macabre. I play violin, Martha plays piano, and the clarinettist is Trina Gross.
