On the daily news we see war, disease, poverty, and man pitted against man. We see billions of impoverished people, displaced by power brokers. We see the super-rich getting richer. Many simply watch this news without understanding it or even trying to. They don't know the bigger picture, the truth about what is really happening out there. The truth is, what happens out there affects us all - and all of these world events are happening not by chance but by design. All of our lives are being affected by just a few men who are members of an elite group. Their ancestors plotted and schemed just as they are doing today. They affect all levels of society from lawmakers and enforcers to religious and political leaders to movie makers and media moguls as well as industrial giants and pharmaceutical billionaires. Through clever manipulation, marketing, propaganda, and force, they control the world, but they aren't the politicians you're thinking of because most often the politicians are pawns themselves. Instead these people are members of a long line, a golden thread through history that stretches back thousands of years and can be traced through their own bloodline. Welcome to the world of a very real and powerful secret society. Language: English. Narrator: Philip Gardiner. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/rt/real/000409/rt_real_000409_sample.mp3. Secrets and Leaks examines the complex relationships among executive power, national security, and secrecy. State secrecy is vital for national security, but it can also be used to conceal wrongdoing. How then can we ensure that this power is used responsibly? Typically, the onus is put on lawmakers and judges, who are expected to oversee the executive. Yet, because these actors lack access to the relevant information and the ability to determine the harm likely to be caused by its disclosure, they often defer to the executive's claims about the need for secrecy. As a result, potential abuses are more often exposed by unauthorized disclosures published in the press. But should such disclosures, which violate the law, be condoned? Drawing on several cases, Rahul Sagar argues that though whistleblowing can be morally justified, the fear of retaliation usually prompts officials to act anonymously - that is, to "leak" information. As a result, it becomes difficult for the public to discern when an unauthorized disclosure is intended to further partisan interests. Because such disclosures are the only credible means of checking the executive, Sagar writes, they must be tolerated. However, the public should treat such disclosures skeptically and subject irresponsible journalism to concerted criticism. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Butler Murray. America's latest sex scandal doesn't involve Republican lawmakers or children forced into prostitution. No, it's all about monster porn! You know, books that depict sexy encounters with bigfoot, serpents, aliens, or just about any potentially dangerous big dude. This is a fantasy genre that is bringing in the big bucks. Susie looks at an article from Business Insider that shows how Amazon and others are selling these books but at the same time asking the authors to rename the titles. Why? Because of censorship and trying to appease the more squirmy buyers who might be offended by a book called Cum for Bigfoot. Finally, in our "What's New on Audible" segment, Susie previews another new and sexy audiobook. This week the book is Once You Go Back by Douglas Martin. The story involves children on the verge of becoming sexual. Susie loves the tender tone and style, and she has a sample for you to listen to. Have a question? Free-market conservatives are actively strategizing on shutting down the government, based on fighting birth control. What's their end game? Susie is fascinated by these Republican lawmakers and has wondered why they are so adamant about getting their way. Reading from Amanda Marcotte's article in The Guardian, Susie covers the major points that make the right wingers so upset with Planned Parenthood's clientele. It has to do with being angry at people who are low-income, female, unmarried, and having kids. Next, Susie looks at a blog written by psychotherapist Marty Klein, who writes about the dirty little secret of couples counseling. "If the public knew how little most therapists learn about sexuality, they's be stunned," he writes. And these are the "experts" giving advice when a couple's sex life goes to pieces. Finally, it's "What's New on Audible". Susie's pick for best audiobook this week is Women, by Chloe Caldwell, narrated by Lauren Fortgang. This is a confessional novella about a straight girl who falls hard for an older butch woman. Susie loves it!Have a question or news story for Susie? Mr. and Mrs. Kliene were founders of the Kliene Hospital for the Ailing. After their death, their will was probated, and everything was left in the jurisdiction of Doctor Slogg, whom they found trustworthy to continue the care of the hospital. Dr. Slogg, his wife, Mariee, and four children enjoyed the luxury of a beautiful chateau on a lake near the hospital.Although he was a man of integrity and protocol, he had never engaged himself in the spiritual life and beliefs of the deceased, so when the town senators and lawmakers approached him to build a wing in the hospital to accommodate unwanted pregnancies, Dr. Slogg and his wife consented to the request.Immediately, they began having nightmares of dead fetuses in boxes and babies screaming, "Don’t kill us." Despite the nightmares, they continued to conduct a series of abortions at the new wing of the hospital, but years later, another law was instituted to shut down the wing and cease the abortion procedures. The majority ruled to have the wing closed and all funding ceased. All the babies who were left to die in incubators were taken to the basement. It was then that rumors began to spread around the hospital of strangers in the basement. Dr. Slogg decided to go into the basement alone, and what transpired changed his life, his family, the town, and the hospital forever. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Andrew Cox. In the most inspiring speech of his career, Ted Kennedy once vowed: "For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die." Unlike his martyred brothers, John and Robert, whose lives were cut off before the promise of a better future could be realized, Ted lived long enough to make many promises come true. During a career that spanned an astonishing half-century, he put his imprint on every major piece of progressive legislation, from health care and education to civil rights. There were times during that career, such as after the incident in Chappaquiddick, when Ted seemed to have surrendered to his demons. But there were other times - after one of his inspiring speeches on the floor of the Senate, for example - when he was compared to Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John Calhoun, and other great lawmakers of the past. Indeed, for most of his life, Ted Kennedy played a kaleidoscope of roles, from destructive thrill seeker to constructive lawmaker; from straying husband to devoted father and uncle. In Ted Kennedy: The Dream That Never Died, celebrated Kennedy biographer Edward Klein at last reconciles these contradictions, painting a stunningly original, up-to-the-moment portrait of Ted Kennedy and his remarkable late-in-life redemption. ungekürzt. Can man live on fast food alone? Morgan Spurlock tried to do just that. For 30 days, he ate nothing but three "squares" a day from McDonald's as part of an investigation into the effects of fast food on American health. The resulting documentary won him resounding applause and a worldwide release that broke box-office records. Audiences were captivated by Spurlock's experiment, during which he gained 25 pounds, his blood pressure skyrocketed, and his libido all but disappeared. But this story goes far beyond Spurlock's good-humored "Mc-Sickness". He traveled across the country, into schools, hospitals, and people's homes, to investigate school lunch programs, the marketing of fast food, and the declining emphasis on health and physical education. He looks at why fast food is so tasty, cheap, and ultimately seductive, and what Americans can do to turn the rising tide of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes that have accompanied its ever-growing popularity. He interviewed experts in 20 U.S. cities, from surgeons general and kids to lawmakers and marketing gurus who share their research, opinions, and "gut feelings" on our ever-expanding girth and what we can all do to offset a health crisis of supersized proportions. In this groundbreaking, hilarious book, "benevolent muckraker" Morgan Spurlock debuts a wry investigative voice that will appeal to anyone interested in the health of our country, our children, and ourselves. ungekürzt. When it comes to living life to its fullest, Rosalind Russell's character Auntie Mame is still the silver screen's exemplar. And Mame, the role Russell (1907-1976) will always be remembered for, embodies the rich and rewarding life Bernard F. Dick reveals in his biography, Forever Mame: The Life of Rosalind Russell. Drawing on personal interviews and information from the archives of Russell and her producer-husband Frederick Brisson, Dick begins with Russell's childhood in Waterbury, Connecticut, and chronicles her early attempts to achieve recognition after graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Frustrated by her inability to land a lead in a Broadway show, she headed for Hollywood in 1934 and two years later played her first starring role, the title character in Craig's Wife. Dick discusses all of her films along with her triumphal return to Broadway, first in the musical Wonderful Town and later in Auntie Mame. Forever Mame details Russell's social circle of such stars as Loretta Young, Cary Grant, and Frank Sinatra. It traces an extraordinary career, ending with Russell's courageous battle against the two diseases that eventually caused her death: rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. Russell devoted her last years to campaigning for arthritis research. So successful was she in her efforts to alert lawmakers to this crippling disease that a leading San Francisco research center is named after her. ungekürzt. Language: English. The first ever comprehensive oral history of President Obama’s administration and the complex political machine that created and powered a landmark American presidency. In this candid oral history of a presidential tenure, author Brian Abrams reveals the behind-the-scenes stories that illuminate the eight years of the Obama White House through more than one hundred exclusive interviews. Among those given a voice in this extraordinary account are Obama’s cabinet secretaries; his teams of speechwriters, legal advisers, and campaign strategists; as well as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who fought for or against his agenda. They recall the early struggles of an idealistic outsider candidate and speak openly about the exacting work that led to cornerstone legislation. They share the failures and dissent that met Obama’s efforts and revisit the paths to his accomplishments. As eyewitnesses to history, their accounts combine to deliver an unfiltered view of Obama’s battle to deliver on his promise of hope and change. This provocative collage of anecdotes, personal reminiscences, and impressions from confidants and critics not only provides an authoritative window into the events that defined an era but also offers the first published account into the making of the forty-fourth president of the United States - one that history will soon not forget. ungekürzt.
