The Bundle of Letters , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 26min
Mór Jókai (1825-1904), also known as Maurus Jokai, was a Hungarian dramatist and novelist. A celebrated doctor receives a visit from a new patient with a most peculiar ailment. He has an excruciatingly painful spot on his hand. But on examination, he can find nothing wrong with the patient at all. He assumes it is a psychosomatic illness, but the patient is insistant that the area of his hand be surgically removed. When the doctor declines this, the patient attempts to cut out the area himself, and the doctor is obliged to complete the operation after all. Apparently cured, and endlessly grateful, the patient leaves. But a few weeks later the condition has recurred, and the doctor must operate on the healthy hand again. A few weeks later, a letter arrives from the patient. The condition has recurred again... but this time the patient is unwilling to try to cure it through surgery again. He explains the background of his strange malady.... and a very peculiar and gripping tale it is.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Cathy Dobson. The Margins of Discretion in Transnational Administrative Acts (eBook, ePUB)
This book analyses the expulsion of delinquent foreigners and their exclusion from the territory through a comparative lens. The book begins with a vertical perspective, focusing on the effects of European standards on the law of expulsion and entry bans in Germany and the Netherlands, and the law regulating deportation from the United Kingdom. It explores how these countries use their margin of discretion, granted by European law, to solve the societal, political and legal challenges that are posed by delinquent foreigners. Moreover, it highlights the similarities, convergences and differences between these countries' approaches to the topic.Subsequently, the book adopts a horizontal perspective by focusing on the effects of national decisions on other states, thereby addressing transnational administrative acts. National expulsion decisions and entry bans can be given effect throughout European countries, with the consequence that other states are in principle obliged to enforce them by refusing foreigners access to their territory. This obligation arises despite the fact that expulsion decisions and entry bans are adopted on the basis of diverging national provisions. Even though the margin of discretion of national decision makers has already been limited, the remaining differences call for further recommendations, which are put forward in this book.- Shop: buecher

The Saint is back - 50 audiobooks are now available starring the debonair classic crime hero. Simon Templar is the Saint - daring, dazzling, and just a little disreputable. On the side of the law, but standing outside it, he dispenses his own brand of justice one criminal at a time. The Saint is on holiday in Austria with Patricia and his friend, Monty, fully intending to give up crime and lead a respectable life. All his good intentions come to nothing, though, when he sees a man being attacked by thugs and feels obliged to intervene. The stranger seems remarkably ungrateful, and soon they learn why: he is a thief, with a prize that men will kill for. Before the day is out, the Saint and his friends find themselves in a race against time, Prince Rudolf, and the police to retain ownership of the priceless jewels. Leslie Charteris was born in Singapore and moved to England in 1919. He left Cambridge University early when his first novel was accepted for publication. He wrote novels about the Saint throughout his life, becoming one of the 20th century's most prolific and popular authors. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Telfer. I am not beautiful.... Knife's entire existence has been as twisted as his flesh and his face. The only thing beautiful in his life is his sister. When Gwennie is obliged to turn a suitor down because she fears to leave her brother to the brutality of their village, Knife is desperate for anything to ensure her happiness. Her suitor's cousin offers him a way out, but it won't be easy. Aerie-Smith has been cursed to walk upright in the form of a beast, and his beloved village suffers from the same spell. Aerie-Smith offers Gwen a trousseau and some hope, if only Knife will keep him company on his island for the span of a year and perform one "regrettable task" at year's end. Knife is unprepared for the form the island's curse takes on his own misshapen body. In one moment of magic, he's given the body of his dreams - and he discovers that where flesh meets spirit and appearance meet reality, sometimes the only place to find truth is in the darkness of a lover's arms. ungekürzt. Tristram Shandy: Penguin English Library, Hörbuch, Digital, 324min
Penguin Classics presents Laurence Sterne’s The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, adapted for audio and available as a digital download as part of the Penguin English Library series. Read by Steven Pacey. "I am got, I know not how, into a cold un-metaphorical vein of infamous writing, and cannot take a plumb-lift out of it for my soul; so must be obliged to go on writing like a Dutch commentator to the end of the chapter, unless something be done...." Laurence Sterne’s great masterpiece of bawdy humour and rich satire defies any attempt to categorize it. Part novel, part digression, its gloriously disordered narrative interweaves the birth and life of the unfortunate "hero" Tristram Shandy, the eccentric philosophy of his father Walter, the amours and military obsessions of Uncle Toby, and a host of other characters, including Dr Slop, Corporal Trim and the parson Yorick. A joyful celebration of the endless possibilities of the art of fiction, Tristram Shandy is also a wry demonstration of its limitations. Part of a series of vintage recordings taken from the Penguin Archives. Affordable, collectable, quality productions - perfect for on-the-go listening. Language: English. Narrator: Steven Pacey. Is There No Place on Earth for Me? , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 813min
This renowned journalist's classic Pulitzer Prize winning investigation of schizophrenia - now reissued with a new postscript - follows a flamboyant and fiercely intelligent young woman as she struggles in the throes of mental illness. "Sylvia Frumkin" was born in 1948 and began showing signs of schizophrenia in her teens. She spent the next seventeen years in and out of mental institutions. In 1978, reporter Susan Sheehan took an interest in her and, for more than two years, became immersed in her life: Talking with her, listening to her monologues, sitting in on consultations with doctors - even, for a period, sleeping in the bed next to her in a psychiatric center. With Sheehan, we become witness to Sylvia's plight: Her psychotic episodes, the medical struggle to control her symptoms, and the overburdened hospitals that, more often than not, she was obliged to call home. The resulting book, first published in 1982, was hailed as an extraordinary achievement: Harrowing, humanizing, moving, and bitingly funny. Now, some two decades later, Is There No Place on Earth for Me continues to set the standard for accounts of mental illness. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kaleo Griffith, Kate Reading. One Wild Weekend With Miller (eBook, ePUB)
Maddy needs cash fast or she'll lose her auto-repair business-is the sexy Ranger who shows up in the middle of the night the man she needs? * Even heroes need saving sometimes… I should have known better. My garage just off Route 66 wasn't even open for business. But when a smokin' hot Army Ranger showed up in the middle of a Monsoon and offered me a fat wad of cash to fix his car no questions asked, I obliged. I swear to begin it was strictly professional. Okay, so it probably wasn't a great idea to offer him a place to sleep… In my bed. And it wasn't exactly professional to get naked with him either. Several times… Call me reckless, but since I wasn't officially open, I did it anyway…repeatedly and didn't regret a single dirty minute of the time we spent together. But the second I replaced his radiator and the storm cleared, it was adios, and thanks for the very pleasant memories. I thought it was over, that I'd never see my mysteriously sexy soldier again. And if I hadn't called him demanding to know why he overpaid me, and if he hadn't acted like he wasn't in trouble when he so obviously was… It probably would have been…- Shop: buecher

Families We Keep (eBook, ePUB)
Why LGBTQ adults don't end troubled ties with parents and why (perhaps) they shouldFamilies We Keep is a surprising look at the life-long bonds between LGBTQ adults and their parents. Alongside the importance of "chosen families" in the queer community, Rin Reczek and Emma Bosley-Smith found that very few LGBTQ people choose to become estranged from their parents, even if those parent refuse to support their gender identity, sexuality, or both. Drawing on interviews with over seventy-five LGBTQ people and their parents, Reczek and Bosley-Smith explore the powerful ties that bind families together, for better or worse. They show us why many feel obliged to maintain even troubled-and sometimes outright toxic-relationships with their parents. They argue that this relationship persists because what we think of as the "natural" and inevitable connection between parents and adult children is actually created and sustained by the sociocultural power of compulsory kinship. After revealing what holds even the most troubled intergenerational ties together, Families We Keep gives us permission to break free of those family bonds that are not in our best interests.Reczek and Bosley-Smith challenge our deep-rooted conviction that family-and specifically, our relationships with our parents-should be maintained at any cost. Families We Keep shines a light on the shifting importance of family in America, and how LGBTQ people navigate its complexities as adults.- Shop: buecher
