In the spring of 1903, the 311, known to locals as “The Majestic”, carried more than 100 passengers on board toward a tunnel mouth that would allow the 13-car locomotive to pass safely through the underbelly of the Canadian Rockies. The tunnel swallowed the 311 whole, and the train - and everyone on it - were never seen again. Search parties scoured the tunnel length with torches, searching for clues as to the big engine’s fate. During that search, some of the men swore they heard a ghostly whistle echoing in the cold Albertan dark. The only thing they found, however, was a lady’s hand fan with an Oriental design, spread wide like a butterfly’s wing. In the winter of 1910, just after a snowy sundown, the Leland Baxter gang, a collection of cattle thieves, gunmen, and cutthroats, wait on horses before a tunnel exit. They wait for the 5409, which secretly carries a train car full of railway cash - wages destined for workers of the copper and gold mines of British Columbia. A payroll they intend to rob. What they will discover, however, is that the approaching train isn’t the 5409. It’s the missing 311, the train only whispered about around dying campfires. A train that some believe still rides the iron rails, traveling to places no mortal should ever go, seeing things no one should ever see. Those men will climb aboard the 311...and will soon realize two sinister truths about the train. The 311 doesn’t ever stop. And no one ever gets off. A very weird Western. Approx 119,000 words. Contains violence, coarse language, and some elements of horror.  ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: R.C. Bray. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/206774/bk_acx0_206774_sample.mp3. After arsonist Tag Noland torches her collie kennel, Susanna Kentwood's life begins to unravel. Her partner Amy betrays their friendship and accuses her of starting the fire, which throws a cloud over her reputation among her dog show friends. Her boyfriend stops calling her. The arsonist Tag Nolan vows to get even with Susanna, whose identification helped send him to prison.Longing to start over again in a new place, Susanna accepts an offer from a distant relative to watch over an old three-story country manor in Maple Creek, Michigan, known as Snowhedge, until it sells. Once she moves to Snowhedge, however, Susanna slowly becomes aware that something is wrong in the house. Her suspicions are confirmed when the parlor, unnaturally cold and empty, transforms itself into a room decorated for a Christmas celebration, complete with a ghostly spirit woman dressed in festive red.Susanna learns that Snowhedge was the scene of a decades-old tragedy and that its previous owner Lila Rose, who died in the house and might have committed suicide, left a record of her supernatural experiences within its walls.By this time, Susanna has seen two more spirits. One is a woman in red and Susanna digs into the house’s history to find out who she might be until, eventually, Susanna's curiosity wins out over her fear.Soon, she eagerly waits for the room to transform itself, giving her a chance to learn the details of the long-ago tragedy. Unfortunately, her absorption in another woman's past leaves her vulnerable to the sinister machinations of Tag Nolan, who is closer than she imagines. ungekürzt. Language: English. Monumental: It Was Never About a Statue is a memoir from Dr. Bellamy, former vice-mayor and current city councilor, city of Charlottesville, Virginia, about the essence of the white supremacist attacks in his city and how a movement to awaken a nation was born.Step into his shoes and hear what it felt like to be in the midst of a war for the soul of a community. Travel with Dr. Bellamy, the only African American city councilor at the time of the attack, on this journey through his personal lens that describes the untold story of a city grappling with the fight for equity while simultaneously fighting to right the wrongs of the past. Monumental covers the year before the white supremacist attacks and the year after as this small Southern city dominated national and international headlines and social media.Dr. Bellamy writes, “They came with torches, they came with swords and shields, they came with guns. They came with signs that called me the N-Word, months earlier they tried to take my livelihood, break down my family, and send us all a message. It was clear this was deeper than a statue. My city was in the midst of a change that the world would see. This monumental shift would have ramifications felt across the world, and through my eyes, it was a fight that almost cost me everything, but it was all worth it."Look through the eyes and the lens of Dr. Bellamy, who is often attributed, for better or worse, as the person who pushed the scene of events into the forefront. The removal of a statue is one thing, but this monumental shift, highlighting race, equity, and justice, was something more. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dr. Wes Bellamy. An inexplicable draft of wind dances across the dirt floors of the narrow passageway, which seems to stretch on with no end. The flickering flames of the torches mounted onto the rough, sandpaper-like walls of stone create eerie shadows on the dirt floors. One can hear the disembodied whispers intermingling with the chill of the musty air, prompting the hair on many people’s arms to raise. Logically speaking, this is nothing more than the trick of the mind, but the whispers unquestionably feel tangible and real, especially considering the visitor is in the company of thousands upon thousands of corpses stacked onto the walls from floor to ceiling. This kind of imagery is often what springs to mind at the mention of the Roman catacombs, but there was so much more to these underground cemeteries. In the late 18th century, as political unrest stirred in the heart of Paris, local residents of the neighborhoods surrounding the city’s urban cemeteries faced a pressing crisis: the putrefying stink of rotting corpses, many of which were likely friends and family members, crept into every house and business due to overflowing burial grounds. The city’s population had long since outgrown its centuries-old cemeteries, and mass graves packed tightly with corpses lay open for months at a time, sometimes upwards of a year, as they waited for more bodies to join. Before long, over-filled charnel houses spilled bones into their neighboring churches.During and after the Enlightenment, science was a popular tool, and many began to question the potential health detriments that such ongoing decay might bring. With growing concerns and rising complaints, the ancient regime of France took steps to begin the long process of transferring old bones from charnel houses and old graves into the miles of tunnels beneath the city streets, now known as the Paris Catacombs. As the French government engaged in this initial step, however, a revolution broke out across the count ungekürzt. This kind of imagery is often what springs to mind at the mention of the Roman catacombs, but there was so much more to these underground cemeteries. As Roman law forbade its citizens from burying their dead within the city walls, the roads of the Appian Way became dotted with, and later completely flanked by tombs of all sizes. Those from the upper echelons of society constructed extravagant tombs and magnificent mausoleums for their families and future descendants. There were tombs and sepulchers of every sort, from tumulus constellations, which were round mounds that rose from the ground, to boxy temples, and clusters of miniature pyramids. Next to every tomb was a milestone marker with the distance to the nearest town engraved on the stone slab. Some of these tombs - or what is left of them - continue to stand in their original sites today. One of the more renowned tombs was that of noblewoman Cecilia Metella, whose mausoleum was later converted to a fortress that featured an enormous cylindrical tower with double-winged crenellations. Another was the resting place of the Rabirii family, which is located close to the fifth Roman mile of the Appian Way. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Clem. Roll up! Roll Up! You have never seen anything like it in your life. The last thing Raymond expected when he went down to his allotment was to be abducted by a flying starfish from Uranus. But these things happen and when he learns that he is being sold as a delicacy in a Venusian auction, he is grateful to be rescued by the travelling circus. But this is not your everyday circus, this is Professor Merlin’s Greatest Show off Earth, with ancient exotic performers who travel between the inhabited worlds in a Victorian steamship. The professor has a job for Raymond: release the 200 people held prisoner on Saturn and save the population of planet Earth from extinction. Simon, Raymond’s best friend, is in trouble, too. The Men in Grey are after him and a cult of Satanic chicken worshippers are keen to use him as a human sacrifice. Simon does have a book from the future that might help him out, and there are all those villagers with the flaming torches. The Greatest Show off Earth is partly set in Bramfield, based upon the actual Sussex village of Henfield, where author Robert Rankin lived for a number of years. Rankin inhabited Raymond’s cottage, which can easily be found by following the directions in the first chapter. The characters are mostly real people the author met and drank with in The Jolly Gardeners, and some, like Simon, Andy, Paul, and Military Dave appear in the book under their own names. With touching naivety, Rankin thought that the locals would appreciate being in his novel. Not all did, and a certain someone, who will remain nameless, shot the windscreen out of Rankin’s car one night, and regularly left dead rats upon the doorstep to signal his disapproval. Country life never really agreed with Robert Rankin and he now lives happily in Brighton, where he no longer puts his neighbours in his books. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Robert Rankin. Doc Turner was one of the least likely heroes that appeared in the pulp magazine stories. He was a little old pharmacist who ran a drug store in the slums of New York, where just about everyone came to him when they had problems. Oh, and what problems they had! Werewolves and vampires mixed in with extortionists and gangsters. And solve their problems he did, with the aid of his strapping red-headed assistant, mechanic Jack Ransom, and his young stock boy Abe Ginsberg. These short stories appeared in the back pages of The Spider magazine, a grand total of 70 of them. Every single one can be found in this collection; not a one is missing. "Killer’s Circus": Doc Turner's little orphan had been swallowed by that crime-carousel - ensnared by a freak who made over humans into his own ghastly image. But the Doc knew a trick - how to make them over again. "The Devil’s Candlestick": Doc Turner had to act fast when his small assistant was snatched by a fire-bug Fagin who had a fiendish formula for turning boys into human torches! "Doc Turner and the Crimson Coffin": Into Doc Turner's little settlement drove that terrible hearse with its coffin death-trap for the poor. Only the little druggist could hope to beat this ruthless racket - by making a corpse rise, of its own volition, from the grave! "Doc Turner’s Coffin Cure": It was the Crusher who had come to Doc Turner's poverty-stricken neighborhood, leaving in his wake human heads smashed to pulp! Only the little Doctor had a way to check that horror-epidemic — by fighting a killer with a corpse! "The Cat from Hell": Upon the defenseless poor, that awesome feline slayer sprang - leaving unclaimed corpses in its wake. But Doc Turner, who had cured the poverty-stricken living, knew how to unleash the relentless fury of the dead! "Death Rocks the Cradle": One by one the children of the poor had died - victims of their own tiny hands. But Doc Turner was ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David K. Aycock. Treasure, tons of shiny gold and silver, and precious jewels. Greed, ravenous, and depraved. Deceit, dishonesty, and treachery. And of course, a beautiful woman. Cuba, Key West, and Mexico. There were a million places that treasure could be hidden. Complications ensnared us. Dead ends blocked our way. And the reaper was impatient. Whenever you look for lost treasure, then somebody's looking for you. Evil men knew what they wanted. Not being able to have it did nothing to deter them. It wouldn’t be the first time they took what wasn’t theirs. In fact, they enjoyed it better that way. And us, the Key West misfits, normal guys that aren’t quite normal. Soldier of fortune vagabonds. Ok, sometimes clowns.True things that never happened? A golden jaguar, sleek and brilliant even after all those years. Eyes of emerald the size of silver dollars winked at us. They blinked as the light of our torches reflected off their facets. The thing weighed a ton. Well maybe not that much. But it had heft to it. Old wrecks and adventure leads to drinking, action, and a hell of a life. Sometimes you bite off more than you can chew. But if you don’t choke to death, you’ll live through it. Sooner or later foul weather hits us all. It’s just the way of the sea. A lovely day of clear blue skis can quickly turn evil. It’s a lesson learned, as usual, the hard way. The odds were not in our favor. But that's what makes a remarkable story. We're only here for a brief time. We want our time to last forever but know that’s just not going to happen. So, work for whatever treasure you seek. Dance while you still can. Excuses come later. Not now. Believe me, I know. Yeah do I know. I lost my job, my house, my money, and most of my hair. But I found myself right after I lost everything. You fall, tough luck. You get back up or get stepped on. Your choice. You don’t like where you are, move. A lot of people start over in key west. I know because I'm one of them. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John J Murray. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/152473/bk_acx0_152473_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
