    Systems theory is often referred as system science. It is an interdisciplinary study of systems in common terms. Here, the term nature also includes the human body's physiological systems, global ecosystems, local ecosystems, climate and human learning processes as well. Systems theory is originated from General System Theory (GST) developed by Ludwig von Bertalanffy. Systems theory can be used in many other fields. Nach der Auffassung früherer Organisationstheoretiker werden soziale Systeme als gegeben in ihrer Umwelt gesehen. Systeme setzen sich aus Teilen oder Elementen zusammen, die miteinander in wechselseitiger Beziehung stehen und als Ganzes gegenüber ihrer Umwelt abgrenzbar sind. Die frühere Systemtheorie geht davon aus, dass zunächst die Umwelt existiert und ein System sich daran an passt. Eine solche Auffassung entspricht der Außenbeobachterperspektive. Die neueren systemtheoretischen Ansätze betrachten Organisation als ein komplexes soziales Handlungssystem. Dabei ersetzt die System/Umwelt - Differenz die veraltete Auffassung früherer Systemtheoretiker und konzentriert sich auf die dynamische Systemgrenze statt auf das statische Systeminnere. Die System/Umwelt-Beziehungen werden dabei als zwei unterschiedliche Seiten einer Medaille gesehen. Der durchgeführte Perspektivenwechsel erlaubt neue Aussagen über die Systemrationalität zu treffen. Alles, was im System und in dessen Umwelt passiert, „kann nun aus Innenbeobachterperspektive allein durch Rückgriff auf ihre selbsterzeugten Elemente und entlang der System/Umwelt-Grenze erklärt werden“.
