The Republic is perhaps the single most important, the most studied and the most quoted text of all of Plato's Socratic Dialogues. Through the medium of Socrates, Plato outlines his view and ideas concerning the ideal working of the city-state. Socrates narrates a conversation that took place the previous day with Cephalus, Glaucon, Thrasymachus and others. The dialogue is organised into 10 books and covers a broad range of topics, including the ideal community, the ideal rulers of the community - philosophers and the philosopher king - and various forms of government, including timocracy, oligarchy, democracy and tyranny. Part of the Ukemi recording of the complete Socratic Dialogues by Plato, it uses the classic translation by Benjamin Jowett and is read with authority by David Rintoul. ungekürzt. Language: English. Though best known now for his collection of lively and vivid Parallel Lives from ancient Greece and Rome, Plutarch (c46 CD-120 CE) was, for centuries, more respected for his Moralia, a remarkable and wide-ranging collection of essays and speeches. No fewer than 78 in total, they range over a broad list of topics in which Plutarch observes, dispenses wisdom, admonishes, entertains and informs: covering social issues and politics, manners and religion - in short, life in general. In this collection, volume 1 of the Ukemi series, are 26 Ethical Essays, a fascinating compilation, again wide-ranging: 'On Education of Children', 'On Love to One’s Offspring', 'On Virtue and Vice', 'On Abundance of Friends', 'On Contentedness of Mind' and many more. It also includes the moving 'Consolatory Letter to His Wife'. Some of Plutarch’s views reflect the environment of a highly educated Greek living in the milieu of the first-century Roman Empire - his comments on conjugal precepts may raise eyebrows when viewed through a 21st-century prism. But much of what he proposes and concludes is as relevant today as in his own time, and in the time of Montaigne (1533-1592) (who regarded the Moralia very highly), and in succeeding centuries. Matthew Lloyd Davies presents Plutarch sympathetically, making these essays eminently absorbing. There is a cause, or a reason, behind everything that happens. This is the fundamental view behind the classical proposition the Principle of Sufficient Reason, which, in 1813, Schopenhauer chose as his subject for further examination in his doctoral dissertation On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason. He was 25. In later years Schopenhauer revised this dissertation and republished it in 1847. The original ideas expressed here formed the basis of much of his later works, and therefore it remains an important core text for Schopenhauer studies. He discusses commentaries on the principle by earlier philosophers including Descartes, Spinoza, Wolff and Kant before going on to propose his four ‘classes of objects’ which he feels offer greater clarity and depth of meaning. The four classes of objects are each governed by their own form of the Principle: the Principle of Sufficient Reason of Becoming, the Principle of Sufficient Reason of Knowing, the Principle of Sufficient Reason of Being and the Principle of Sufficient Reason of Willing. This recording of On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason uses the clear, classic translation by Madame Karl Hillebrand (1903). Leighton Pugh presents it with the same clarity and commitment he has brought to his recording of all three volumes of The World as Will and Idea (Ukemi Audiobooks).PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio. ungekürzt. Here are the Socratic Dialogues presented as Plato designed them to be - living discussions between friends and protagonists, with the personality of Socrates himself coming alive as he deals with a host of subjects, from justice and inspiration to courage, poetry and the gods. Plato's Socratic Dialogues provide a bedrock for classical Western philosophy. For centuries they have been read, studied and discussed via the flat pages of books, but the ideal medium for them is the spoken word. Some are genuine dialogues while some are dialogues reported by a narrator supposedly at a later date. Ukemi Audiobooks presents all of the Socratic Dialogues in a series of recordings divided into Early Period (Volumes 1 & 2), Middle Period (Volumes 1 & 2) and Late Period (Volume 1) - based on their likely composition by Plato. This opening volume starts with perhaps the most famous speech, The Apology, Socrates' doomed defence against the charge of heresy and corrupting the young. It is followed by Crito, in which Socrates' friend offers to spirit him out of Athens to avoid execution. Among the others are discussions on Courage (Laches), and Friendship (Lysis). The role of Socrates is taken by David Rintoul, a widely admired and experienced audiobook reader who studied philosophy at university before taking a different path to RADA, TV, theatre and film. He is joined by a broad range of readers, most known to Audible listeners. Each Dialogue is prefaced with a short introduction to set the scene for newcomers to Plato. Translation: Benjamin Jowett. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Rintoul, full cast. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/dhrm/000073/bk_dhrm_000073_sample.mp3. Volume 2 of Parerga and Paralipomena has a very different character from Volume 1. There are, in total, 31 Essays, 24 of which are presented here. The range of topics is very varied, opening with 'On Philosophy and Its Method' and including 'On Pantheism', 'On Ethics', 'On Jurisprudence', 'On Men of Learning', 'On Thinking for Oneself', 'On Religion' and 'The Vanity of Existence'. Quite a few open windows on to the personality of Schopenhauer himself - for example, he praises dogs as companions, argues that animals should be chloroformed before slaughter: animal welfare was very much in his sights. He inveighs against useless indulgence in luxury: 'the most effective way of alleviating human misery would be to diminish luxury, or even abolish it altogether.' A thinker at home with his thoughts, he remarks with a touch of resigned humour: 'The pen is to thought what the stick is to walking, but one walks most easily without a stick, and thinks most perfectly when no pen is at hand. It is only when a man begins to get old that he likes to make use of a stick and his pen.'His writings range widely over the international intellectual and cultural spectrum. There are numerous references to Eastern thought - especially Buddhism and Brahmanism as translations into European languages from Pali and Sanskrit gathered force during Schopenhauer's active life. He clearly found himself comfortable in this body of thought, often comparing it favourably with the Western Judaic-Christian heritage. As always he makes liberal use of quotations and footnotes and these have been translated and incorporated into the main text for this recording. For Leighton Pugh, who has now recorded the main body of Schopenhauer's work for Ukemi Audiobooks, spending many days in the studio with this hugely influential figure has been like 'training at altitude.' He remarked that the time spent with the varied and accessible essays in Parerga and Paralipom ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Leighton Pugh. Pyotr Kropotkin (1842-1921) was one of the most interesting figures to emerge from the Russian Communist movement, developing the path of Communist Anarchism: he was not associated, either in theory or practice with the violence associated with that time of great change. Born into a Russian aristocratic land-owning family, he was affected by the injustice he saw as a young man on his father’s estate and committed himself early to social change; but his study and interest in science, geography, anthropology and philosophy enriched and broadened his political views. Fields, Factories, and Workshops (1898) was one of his three most important texts (along with The Conquest of Bread and Mutual Aid - also available on Ukemi Audiobooks). Its subtitle - Industry Combined with Agriculture and Brain Work with Manual Work - indicates that although he starts from a Marxist standpoint, concerned with the exploitation of the wage labourer and the inequality suffered by the majority of the social classes, he was equally concerned with the 'human needs of the individual’. Kropotkin argues that science of political economy should acknowledge that the life of the human being went beyond the narrow presentation of him as a wage-earning, labouring worker.  ‘Man shows his best when he is in a position to apply his usually varied capacities to several pursuits in the farm, the workshop, the factory, the study or the studio, instead of being riveted for life to one of these pursuits only.’ A crucial observation in Kropotkin’s time, this is equally relevant to the 21st century!Fields, Factories, and Workshops is a collection of essays written between 1888-1890. It opens with ‘The Decentralisation of Industries’ and continues with ‘The Possibilities of Agriculture’ and ‘Small Industries and Industrial Villages’ and concludes with ‘Brain Work and Manual Work’. Kropotkin discusses in some detail statistics of economic activity ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Peter Kenny. The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud is one of the most significant books of the 20th century. Though dreams and their role in human consciousness have been a continuing thread in religion and art and life down the centuries, Freud's look at the subject through the prism of his emerging practice and study of psychoanalysis provided a startlingly new and challenging perspective. First published in German in 1899, it sold slowly; but over the following decade he revised and expanded it in response to his experiences working with patients, reviewing his own dreams, and discussions and debates with colleagues. It was translated into numerous languages. In this extensive work he considers the meaning of dreams experienced by individuals generation after generation: dreams of flying, of death, of anger, of sex, of fear, of power. What do they signify, in general terms and in relation to individuals and their own personal situations? In this seminal book, Freud relates and discusses case histories and the effects of analysis. The remembered dreams have navigated the various passages of unconscious and preconscious filters to emerge into daylight, undergoing internal censorship and wish fulfilment and change and many other factors. So what are these dreams really saying or revealing? What anxiety or hope are they signaling? Sexuality plays a key role - this book contains the first emergence of Freud's Oedipus complex, among other sexual issues. The Interpretation of Dreams is not an easy book - Freud himself produced an abridged version. But its influence on the 20th century, and particularly on Western awareness and society, cannot be underestimated. This classic translation of The Interpretation of Dreams by A. A. Brill dates from 1932 and contains all the major revisions made by Freud, and his footnotes. It has an important place in the audio recordings of Freud's major work, read clearly by Derek Le Page for Ukemi Audiobo ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Derek Le Page. Plotinus (204/5 -270CE), born in Lycopolis, Egypt, when it was part of the Roman Empire, was a major figure in the philosophical school later called Neoplatonism. Neoplatonists viewed reality as deriving from a single force or figure expressed as 'the One'. Two further concepts from Plotinus, 'the Intellect' and 'the Soul', are also principal features of his philosophy. These proposals led to the work of Plotinus forming a bridge between Plato and the monotheistic religions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam as well as Gnosticism. Yet Plotinus, who spoke Greek, did not actually leave a written legacy of his ideas. His work was written down and compiled by a pupil, Porphyry of Tyre (c234-c305 CE). Porphyry presented Plotinus' work in six Enneads, each containing nine Tractates (ennea = nine in Greek), amounting to 54 treatises in all. They were originally arranged into three volumes, but in this Ukemi recording they are divided into two equal parts, Volume One and Volume Two. Volume One contains the first three Enneads prefaced by the fascinating biography written by Porphyry, who describes Plotinus as a highly singular figure - he declined to sit for a painter or sculptor, he wouldn't eat meat from animals reared for the table, and he 'caught philosophy at the age of 20'. This recording is Volume Two, which contains The Enneads 4-6. The Fourth Ennead concerns epistemological matters, opening with 'On the Essence of the Soul' (First Tractate) and concludes with 'Are All Souls One?' The Fifth Ennead is concerned with intellectual matters, opening with 'On the Three Primary Hypostases' and concluding with 'On Intellect, the Forms and Being'. The Sixth Ennead concerns being in general and the One above intellect, opens with 'On the Kinds of Being' and concludes with 'On the Good and the One'. Translated by Stephen MacKenna. ungekürzt.
