In Death at La Fenice, Donna Leon’s first novel in the Commissario Brunetti series, readers were introduced to the glamorous and cut-throat world of opera and to one of Italy’s finest living sopranos, Flavia Petrelli, then a suspect in the poisoning of a renowned German conductor. Now, many years after Brunetti cleared her name, Flavia has returned to the illustrious La Fenice to sing the lead in Tosca. As an opera superstar, Flavia is well acquainted with attention from adoring fans and aspiring singers. But when one anonymous admirer inundates her with bouquets of yellow roses - onstage, in her dressing room, and even inside her locked apartment - it becomes clear that this fan has become a potentially dangerous stalker. Distraught, Flavia turns to an old friend for help. Familiar with Flavia’s melodramatic temperament, Commissario Brunetti is at first unperturbed by her story, but when another young opera singer is attacked he begins to think Flavia’s fears may be justified. In order to keep his friend out of danger, Brunetti must enter the psyche of an obsessive fan and find the culprit before anyone comes to harm. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Rintoul. As sentient beings, we all know that we will die someday, but by the same token, we all fear of death. Even if death sounds really scary, all of us are willing not only to take high risks but also to subject ourselves to dangers throughout our whole lives, regardless of whether we realize it or not. Why is it so? It is simply because none of us believes in the ephemeral nature of life. When death comes to strangers, to our neighbors, to our blood relatives, and even to our family members, we still serenely live with the mentality that death will never come to us. Before we are diagnosed with a lethal illness, we live as if our lives would last forever. On the contrary, after we learn that we have a serious health issue or carry a death-defying sickness which will soon lead to demise, we act as if death was a totally new concept to us. Why have we never thought of death when we fly? Why have we never thought of death when we drive on a highway? Why have we never thought of death when we surf in the ocean? Why have we never thought of death when we are involved in a risky business? Why do we have to wait until when we are on the brink of death then become terrified of it all of a sudden? The answer is that before we are on the verge of dying, our mind refuses to accept the concept of "death". Hence, we all feel unperturbed talking about death. It is painless as if we chat about food, discuss about clothes, talk about the weather, or sing the alphabet song. Cancer: Prevention Is Better Than Cure lucidly gives us a friendly but serious wake up call. Language: English. Narrator: Josh Goodman. Oscar Wilde was an Irish playwright, novelist, essayist, and poet. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. He is remembered for his epigrams, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, his plays, as well as the circumstances of his imprisonment and early death. Wilde's parents were successful Anglo-Irish Dublin intellectuals. Their son became fluent in French and German early in life. At university, Wilde read Greats; he proved himself to be an outstanding classicist, first at Dublin, then at Oxford. He became known for his involvement in the rising philosophy of aestheticism, led by two of his tutors, Walter Pater and John Ruskin. After university, Wilde moved to London into fashionable cultural and social circles. As a spokesman for aestheticism, he tried his hand at various literary activities: He published a book of poems, lectured in the United States and Canada on the new "English Renaissance in Art", and then returned to London where he worked prolifically as a journalist. Known for his biting wit, flamboyant dress and glittering conversation, Wilde became one of the best-known personalities of his day. At the turn of the 1890s, he refined his ideas about the supremacy of art in a series of dialogues and essays, and incorporated themes of decadence, duplicity, and beauty into his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890). The opportunity to construct aesthetic details precisely, and combine them with larger social themes, drew Wilde to write drama. He wrote Salome (1891) in French in Paris, but it was refused a license for England due to the absolute prohibition of biblical subjects on the English stage. Unperturbed, Wilde produced four society comedies in the early 1890s, which made him one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London. ungekürzt. Language: English.
